Carlos Pena is going to lose some playing time with the Rays, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin.
In order to give Evan Longoria time to heal, manager Joe Maddon is going to use the third baseman primarily as the DH. Jeff Keppinger will play first base in place of Pena, especially against left-handed pitchers.
Pena has hit just .196/.322/.358 this season. His .163/.278/.318 line against lefties has really hurt his overall production.
Pena will continue to be used as a defensive replacement in games he doesn’t start.
