Rays designated hitter Luke Scott has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to lower back spasms, the club announced Saturday. As a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Brandon Gomes was activated.

Scott, 35, is hitting .249/.336/.430 with nine homers and 39 RBI in 78 games this season. Jason Bourgeios, Sean Rodriguez and Sam Fuld are candidates to see an uptick in playing time with Scott on the shelf.

Possibly of note here: Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported Friday that there was mutual interest between Delmon Young and the Rays. Young was drafted and developed by the Rays before being traded after the 2007 season. He hit .261/.302/.397 with eight homers and 31 RBI in 80 games before the Phillies designated him for assignment.
