The Red Sox have placed reliever Scott Atchison on the 15-day disabled list with right forearm tightness, the club announced Sunday. As a corresponding move, the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Atchison, 36, is in the midst of easily the best season of his career. He has a 1.76 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 46 innings. He entered the season with a career ERA of 4.09.
Also, Atchison has been a revelation for the Red Sox, who lost closer Andrew Bailey before the season and had offseason acquisition Mark Melancon have a horrible start to the season. Atchison has teamed with Matt Albers, Franklin Morales and Alfredo Aceves to solidify the bullpen. Atchison has specialized in stranding baserunners, as he has done so with 83.3 percent of them.
Tazawa, 26, has five appearances for the Red Sox this season. He's yet to allow an earned run and has a 0.79 WHIP in 6 1/3 innings.
