The Athletics are likely to pick up closer Grant Balfour’s option at the end of the season, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser.
Balfour has had an interesting season with the A’s. After opening the year as the closer, Balfour lost his job to both Brian Fuentes and Ryan Cook. While Cook had an exceptional run, even making the All-Star game, Balfour has reclaimed the closer role. Since moving back into the role, Balfour has gone a perfect seven for seven in save situations.
Balfour is currently in the final season of a two-year, $8.1 million contract, but the team also holds a $4.5 million option for next season. With Balfour playing so well, there’s a good chance Oakland will exercise that option. If the team doesn’t pick up his option, they can buy out Balfour's deal for $350,000.
In 59.1 innings, Balfour has a 2.58 ERA and a 3.50 FIP for the Athletics. He’s saved 14 games for the team this season.
