Dodgers outfielder Bobby Abreu has cleared waivers, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported. Abreu was designated for assignment last week. He's accepted his minor-league assignment, tweeted CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.
The left-handed hitting Abreu is batting .246/.347/.340 in 78 games and 203 at-bats, with two home runs and 17 RBI. He has a .719 OPS against left-handed pitching (45 ABs) and a .679 OPS against right-handers (158 ABs).
Abreu signed with the Dodgers after the Angels released him at the end of April. They're paying him $401,311, with the Angels picking up the remainder of his $9 million 2012 salary. (All contract information courtesy of Baseball Prospectus.)
With the Dodgers having sent Tony Gwynn Jr. to Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday night, and with reports that Gwynn Jr. will be back in September when rosters expand, it's unclear where Abreu fits into the Dodgers' plans.
