<img src= second baseman Dustin Pedroia has been unable to shake a thumb injury over the past several weeks. So the Red Sox are forced to place him on the 15-day disabled list, reports bostonherald.com.
Pedroia, 28, is struggling through a big-time down year compared to the high bar he's set for himself -- and surely the thumb has been at least partially the cause of the offensive struggles. Pedroia's hitting .266/.326/.400 with 19 doubles, two triples, six homers, 33 RBI and 41 runs. His career slash line is .301/.369/.457.
With Pedroia on the shelf, the Red Sox will likely go with Nick Punto at second base.
