The Mets are trying to upgrade their bullpen, but the team also needs to go after a right-handed hitter, writes the Daily News' Andy Martino.
Martino spoke to a prominent Mets player who said the team "can't hit lefties" and should acquire a right-handed hitter.
Martino mentions Carlos Quentin, Jonny Gomes and Shane Victorino as potential targets. Victorino is a switch hitter, but has hit lefties more effectively throughout his career.
David Wright spoke about the team's need for more help against lefties, stating the team plays in a division where they regularly face Cliff Lee, Gio Gonzalez, Cole Hamels and Mark Buehrle.
Lucas Duda needs to start hitting better to offset his poor defense, according to a team official who spoke with Martino.
The Mets could use Daniel Murphy as trade bait since they don't want to part with any of their young prospects.
Martino mentions the team has already contacted the Padres about Huston Street, and have considered talking to Brad Lidge's agent.
While the team has been linked to reliever Francisco Rodriguez, one of the players Martino talked to was not in favor of the move, saying K-Rod has too much baggage.
