The New York Mets have placed outfielders Scott Hairston and Andres Torres on waivers, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin.

The Giants, who are in the market for a right-handed batter in the outfield to face left-handed pitching, will likely consider placing a claim on Hairston, though other teams chasing the Giants in the standings could also place a claim on the cost-effective outfielder.

Hairston has hit .272/.312/.512 with 14 home runs in 301 plate appearances this season, but has hit .320/.353/.605 with nine home runs in 156 plate appearances against left-handed pitching.

Torres has hit .233/.338/.329 with 10 stolen bases in 334 plate appearances this season and is a candidate to go unclaimed. Teams have until Monday afternoon to place a claim on either player.

In other Mets news, general manager Sandy Alderson wants to work on long-term contracts for third-baseman David Wright and starting pitcher R.A. Dickey this offseason and "fully expects" the pair to be with the team long-term. Both players have club options for 2013 that will presumably be exercised if long-term deals cannot be worked out. Both players have expressed interest in staying in New York.
