Ryan Roberts was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks and is likely to be traded, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.
Teams can claim Roberts on waivers, but the Diamondbacks have 10 days to work out a trade before the waiver process completes. Roberts is hitting just .250/.306/.357 this season but would likely be claimed on the basis of his .249/.341/.427 season as part of the Diamondbacks' 94-win campaign last year.
Roberts was told a deal was on the "1-yard line" according to Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona.
John McDonald was activated off the disabled list to replace Roberts, Piecoro added. McDonald last played July 2 due to a back injury.
