The Tigers sit just 3.5 games out of first at the break, and should make a run at the post-season, said mlive.com's Bill Simonson.

  • The team should trade for a right-handed bat capable of playing a corner outfield spot. Carlos Quentin and Justin Upton would both fit.
  • Brennan Boesch is a candidate to be moved in a deal for either outfielder. Simonson also mentioned a "minor league pitcher and catcher" could be offered for Upton or Quentin.
  • This would enable Andy Dirks or Quintin Berry to play everyday. Dirks is still recovering from an Achilles injury. Berry has emerged this season, hitting .299/.388/.417 in 168 plate appearances. Until Berry cools off, he should not be taken out of the lineup, Simonson said.
  • The team could also use a veteran starter, and Matt Garza would be ideal. Simonson suggested the Tigers offer Rick Porcello and another prospect for Garza.
  • Outfielder Delmon Young has heated up, and could become trade bait. Young is hitting just .271/.298/.418 this season.
  • If the Tigers can acquire a veteran pitcher and outfield bat, Simonson sees them as World Series contenders.
