The Tigers are likely to call up some relievers once rosters expand, according to Mlive.com’s Chris Iott.
The Tigers haven’t really called up that many players in September since Jim Leyland has been the manager. But the team is in need of help in the bullpen. Iott and colleague James Schmehl looked at which relievers are most likely to get the call.
Al Alburquerque seems like a good bet to be called up. Alburquerque, who is coming off elbow surgery, has been very effective on his rehab assignment.
Duane Below does not look like a candidate to be called up. Below and pitcher Drew Smyly are very similar, and it doesn’t make sense for the Tigers to carry both players. Smyly is already on the team, and it doesn’t look like the Tigers will try to replace him.
Luis Marte was initially named to the Tigers’ opening day roster, but fell to injuries early in the season. Both Iott and Schmehl think he’ll be back up with the team in September.
Luke Putkonen, Bruce Rondon and Daniel Schlereth are also considered for spots, but Iott and Schmehl thinks it’s unlikely any of the three will be called up. Putkonen isn’t as good as the other options and Schlereth gives the team too many lefties. Rondon is considered the closer of the future, but he’s also just 21 years old. He’s thrown just five career innings in Triple-A. Bringing him up now would be rushing him.
