The Twins will try to add three starters this offseason, according to 1500ESPN.com’s Phil Mackey.
The team held its organizational meetings recently and discussed the club’s strategy going forward. During these meetings, team officials evaluated players on the Twins' major and minor league rosters and determined possible free-agent and trade targets.
The majority of the Twins’ budget will focus on free-agent starting pitching, though the team will also scour the trade market. Scott Diamond is the only returning starter whom the Twins are counting on for next season, according to Mackey.
Free-agent Zack Greinke hasn’t been eliminated from discussions, but it seems more likely that the team would go after multiple pitchers rather than one top-of-the-rotation starter.
If the Twins turn their attention to the trade market, Joe Mauer will be their only untouchable asset. The team is also trying to determine whether Trevor Plouffe is a long-term answer at third base. After finishing last in the AL Central, it looks like the team is prepared to make some significant changes.
