The White Sox are still talking with third baseman Kevin Youkilis but are also considering internal options at the position, according to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune.
The club has been in touch with Youkilis, but van Dyck expects him to sign with a team willing to offer more years and more money. If the White Sox can’t convince Youkilis to re-sign, they could consider moving Dayan Viciedo back to third base or promote prospect Carlos Sanchez.
The 23-year-old Viciedo came up as a third baseman but was eventually moved to the outfield. He played third for the White Sox in 2010 but is not considered a strong fielder at the position. Viciedo was the club’s primary left fielder last season. While it seems unlikely they would move him back to third, the market at the position could force their hand.
The other option is the 20-year-old Sanchez. Sanchez has primarily played up-the-middle during his minor league career but does have experience at third. His versatility could be the reason the White Sox break camp with him next season. General manager Rick Hahn said that the team will take the best 25 players next season, and Sanchez’s ability to play multiple positions could put him in that class.
Sanchez surged through the White Sox’s system in 2012, playing at four levels. He has relied on his patience and speed to propel up the club's prospect list. Sanchez’s performance in the Arizona Fall League is also getting him some attention within the organization. He has hit .323/.413/.415 thus far.
