The New York Yankees fell 6-2 at the hands of the Boston Red Sox in the American League Wild Card Game on Tuesday. Yankees starter Gerrit Cole surrendered three runs in just two innings of work against his division rivals.
During Wednesday's installment of "Nothing Personal with David Samson," David Samson weighed in on how the game unfolded and revealed that Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn't make any managerial mistakes.
"Can I blame Aaron Boone for the loss? Did he make any managerial mistakes? When I'm watching yesterday's game, I would've pulled Cole exactly when he did in the third inning," Samson said. "You can't let that game get out of hand when you're down three runs. If Cole doesn't have it, he doesn't have it. If (Max) Scherzer doesn't pitch well tonight in L.A., he's going to get pulled too. In a one-game elimination game, managers have to have a quick hook."
Cole obviously didn't have his best stuff early on during Tuesday's game. After walking Rafael Devers, Cole served up a two-run home run to Xander Bogaerts to open the scoring in the first inning. From an offensive standpoint, the Yankees registered just two runs on six hits throughout the contest. Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton provided five of those hits.
Samson simply doesn't believe that there was anything different that Boone could've done that may have changed the outcome of the game.
