- In the midst of a season-long slump, Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch could be a candidate to start losing playing time, according to mlive.com’s Chris Iott. Boesch is hitting .250/.286/.388 this season, and manager Jim Leyland can’t seem to figure out how to get him going. If Boesch is unable to turn things around, he could start to lose playing time. Andy Dirks is a candidate to be the everyday left fielder, with Jeff Baker and Quintin Berry sharing time in right. Iott adds that Boesch is probably on a short leash, and needs to turn things around soon if he hopes to keep his job.
- David Wright is “optimistic” that he’ll sign a long-term deal with the Mets, according to the New York Post’s Mike Puma. Wright, however, won’t negotiate during the season. The Mets hold a $16 million extension on Wright for next season, which they are expected to exercise when the season ends. Then, the team will work with Wright to hammer out a long-term deal. If the two sides can’t agree on a deal during the offseason, Wright will not negotiate once games begin. Wright said that money won’t be the deciding factor in whether he stays with the Mets. Above all, he wants to win.
- With Mike Carp expected to be placed on the disabled list, first baseman Justin Smoak could return to Seattle, according to MLB.com’s Greg Johns. After hitting just .189/.253/.320 in 375 plate appearances, the Mariners demoted Smoak to Triple-A in late July. Smoak hasn’t been much better in the minors, hitting .242/.390/.364.
