The Twins have declined their $6 million option on former closer Matt Capps, the team announced on Wednesday.
Capps, 29, had 14 saves for the Twins in 2012, going 1-4 with a 3.68 ERA in 30 appearances. Capps had two stints on the disabled list in 2012 with right shoulder inflammation. He made just three appearances after the All-Star break, including his last on Sept. 24, when he pitched an inning in a loss to the Yankees.
Capps has 138 saves in his eight years in the big leagues, including 42 between the Nationals and Twins in 2010. The Twins re-signed him to a one-year, $7.15 million deal after the 2010 season, his final year of arbitration. After a poor 2011 (4-7. 4.25 ERA and 15 saves), the Twins re-signed him to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million and $250,000 buyout of his 2013 option.
In Capps' absence, left-hander Glen Perkins recorded 16 saves for the Twins. Perkins signed a three-year extension with the Twins before last season, paying him $10.3 million through 2015 with a team option for 2016.
The Twins also outrighted pitchers Jeff Manship, Luis Perdomo, Esmerling Vasquez, Kyle Waldrop, P.J. Walters and outfielder Matt Carson. The team said right-handed pitcher Carlos Gutierrez was claimed on outright waivers by the Cubs and added to their 40-man roster.
