Major League Baseball has suspended Indians ace Ubaldo Jimenez for five games in response to his throwing at (and hitting) Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki on Monday, CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports. After vested parties were separated, Tulowitzki was removed from the game and given precautionary x-rays, which turned out negative. He's day-to-day with elbow swelling.
Given the palace intrigue surrounding the Ubaldo-Tulo feud and given that Commissioner Bud Selig was in the stands during the game in question, a swift response from MLB isn't surprising. If the post-game comments are any guide, though, Rockies manager Jim Tracy likely doesn't see five games as equal to a pound of flesh.
In essence, Jimenez, barring a successful appeal (one assumes a pro-forma appeal is forthcoming), will miss one turn through the rotation. The Indians had previously announced that right-hander Justin Masterson would be their opening-day starter. Meanwhile, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that no Rockies were suspended as a result of the near-brawl.
