Angels outfielder Vernon Wells is bound for thumb surgery and will miss the next eight to 10 weeks.
Wells injured his right thumb while sliding into second base on Sunday against the Padres, and on Monday he was diagnosed with torn ligaments, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.
The 33-year-old Wells is hitting .244/.282/.422 on the season and is still owed the balance of his $21 million salary for this season and a total of $42 million for 2013-14.
While an injury to any player is never a good thing in the human sense, Wells's time away means the Angels will finally trot out their ideal outfield arrangement: Mike Trout, Peter Bourjos and Torii Hunter (once he returns from the restricted list before the end of the week). The shame is that it took an injury to force Mike Scioscia's hand.
