If you build it, they may come, but there's no guarantee they'll pay full price.
The Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, Iowa, has been sold for $3.4 million, a full $2 million under the original listing price when it was put on the market two years ago, according to The Associated Press. The deal was agreed upon in October 2011, with the sale just going through recently.
An investor group that includes Hall-of-Famer Wade Boggs bought the land from Don and Becky Lansing and plans to turn it into All-Star Ballpark Heaven, a $38-million, 24-field youth baseball and softball tournament complex. It would also have an indoor training center, according to earlier reports. The group hopes to open in 2014.
The Dyersville Commercial reports Go the Distance Baseball LLC has "more than 10 investors on board," but none has been named other than Boggs.
The deal has been in the works for more than a year, with some local residents unhappy about the proposed development, which will receive tax breaks from the state. A district court judge twice denied petitions from opponents upset with a zoning decision for the project, according to the newspaper.
The site includes 193 acres, mostly cornfields, as well as the two-bedroom house featured in the movie, the baseball field and six other buildings, according to an AP story from 2011.
Dyersville is in eastern Iowa, about 200 miles from both Chicago and Milwaukee.
