The Phillies keep finding ways to eke out victories. On Saturday night, that meant a game-ending bang-bang play at the plate.
To set the scene: Jordan Pacheco of the Reds hit a fly ball to left fielder Tyler Goeddel with one out in the ninth inning and runners on second and third. Goeddel made the catch and unleashed a strong, accurate throw that found catcher Cameron Rupp just in time for him to tag Eugenio Suarez -- despite the latter making a lot of contact with the former:
Because nothing is that cut and dried anymore, the umpires reviewed the play to see if Rupp had violated the home plate collision rules. They deemed that he hadn't, and that was that.
Now 22-15, the Phillies are somehow in contention. It's still early, and their offense is too poor to think this will last, but Philadelphia's fans should just enjoy the ride for as long as they can.
