The White Sox have acquired closer Brett Myers from the Astros, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports. CBSSports.com Insider Danny Knobler confirms Rosenthal's report.
Astros broadcaster Dave Raymond tweets that lefty prospect Blair Walters, age 22, (97.2 IP, 3.96 ERA, 93 K, 22 BB across Low-A and High-A this season); 21-year-old right-hander Matt Heidenreich (111.2 IP, 3.95 ERA, 71 K, 18 BB across High-A and Double-A) and a player-to-be-named are headed Houston's way.
On the season, Myers has a 3.52 ERA in 30.2 innings pitched. Over that span, he's struck out 20, walked five unintentionally and given up four home runs.
While current ChicagoChicago Cubs closer Addison Reed has shutdown stuff, he's struggled with his consistency this season. The team as a whole has blown 15 saves on the year and converted just 58% of all save opportunities. With that said, manager Robin Ventura says he's going to stick with Reed for the time being. "He’s (Myers) probably in there doing the same stuff as Jesse (Crain)," Ventura told CSNChicago's Dan Hayes. "Reeder is still going to be closing. There’s the option to move (Myers) around and do a lot of different stuff. But for me right now, Addy has really earned the right to do that. He’s going to be the one doing that."
Myers is owed the balance of his $11-million salary for 2012, and he also has a $10-million option/$3-million buyout for 2013. However, our own Jon Heyman reports that the White Sox will be on the hook for just $1 million of Myers's 2012 salary and will receive cash from Houston to defray their 2013 salary commitment.
