The White Sox have placed starting pitcher Gavin Floyd on the disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain retroactive to Aug. 27 and recalled starting pitcher Dylan Axelrod, the team annouced Tuesday.
The White Sox have also assigned outfielder Alejandro De Aza to Triple-A Charlotte for a rehab assignment.
This will be the second trip to the disabled list this year for Floyd, who is 9-9 with a 4.54 ERA in 24 starts. He left Sunday's game after two innings with an elbow injury, though a subsequent MRI showed no damage.
Axelrod has made 10 appearances (six starts) for the White Sox this year, going 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 31 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings. He's been much better in Triple-A this year, going 7-5 in 16 starts with a 2.88 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 92 strikeouts in 97 innings.
De Aza, who is recovering from a bruised rib cage, was placed on the disabled list last week retroactive to Aug. 18. He has hit .281/.346/.398 with six home runs and 21 stolen bases in 494 plate appearances.
