Wilmer Flores not necessarily headed to DL

The Mets have not ruled out a trip to the disabled list for Wilmer Flores as a result of his twisted right ankle, but there is optimism that he may be able to avoid that fate. Manager Terry Collins was optimistic about that possibility when asked about it Wednesday.

"I don't know how long it's going to be," Collins told MLB.com. "If we're talking four or five days from now, then that's an issue. But if he recovers pretty fast, he should be able to play this weekend. If not, then we have issues."

Flores was doing a bit better Wednesday, and he will try to take batting practice Thursday. It is not clear whether he will try to run on it right away, but the team is obviously going to be careful with his recovery.

"I don't think it is anything that's going to be ultimately serious that he's going to miss a really extended period of time," Collins continued. "Unless we run him back out there too early and he twists it again."

Flores was able to pinch-hit in Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, though he had to be replaced by a pinch-runner after he singled.
