Yasmani Grandal could face season-ending surgery

Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after suffering damage to the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee during Saturday's game against the Nationals, according to MLB.com. Grandal was injured on a play at the plate.

"I thought I'd have time to get my foot out," Grandal said. "I didn't really expect the impact. I knew that something was wrong. You just don't get knee pain for no reason."

Grandal will receive an X-ray on his knee Sunday before having an MRI Monday. If Grandal needs surgery, then his season will be over. Rene Rivera is being summoned from Triple-A Tucson to take Grandal's roster spot and Nick Hundley should assume the starting catcher duties.

"It was one of those rare plays where you've got to keep your foot on the plate if you're going to get an out," said Grandal, who was using crutches after the game. "It happens."
