Garza will have shoulder surgery later in the week, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
Garza will undergo shoulder surgery later in the week to fix a labrum injury suffered during a collision back in June. The 34-year-old right-hander appears to be on the decline after accruing a 4.94 ERA over 114.2 innings in 2017 with the Brewers. Garza became a free agent after the season, and with surgery looming, it seems unlikely that any team will be eager to sign him in the near future.

Brewers' Matt Garza: Set to become free agent
Garza's contract no longer carries a club option for 2018, as that was voided after he crossed a threshold of games, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
It had been widely believed that the Brewers had a $5 million option to retain Garza for 2018, but that is not the case anymore. He will be a free agent after the conclusion of the 2017 season. Garza will be available out of the bullpen over the final two games of the season. He has not posted an ERA under 4.50 since 2014, and could struggle to secure a fully guaranteed big-league deal this winter.

Brewers' Matt Garza: Likely bound for bullpen this week
The Brewers named Aaron Wilkerson as their starter for Wednesday's series finale with the Pirates, likely meaning that Garza will remain in the bullpen this week.
The struggling Garza was bypassed for a start last Friday against the Marlins, with manager Craig Counsell instead turning to reliever Jeremy Jeffress to start what ended up being a bullpen game. After serving as a member of the rotation at Double-A Biloxi for the bulk of the season, Wilkerson should be able to offer the Brewers more innings than Jeffress did in what will be Wilkerson's first major-league start, but even if the rookie falters in the outing, it's unlikely the team would go back to Garza in a rotation role at any other point during the final two weeks of the season. After Wednesday's contest, the Brewers will only require a fifth starter once more in the penultimate game of the regular season, and if the team is still in playoff contention at that point, Counsell would probably lean on one of his other four starters on short rest rather than turn to Garza. The veteran right-hander made his first relief appearance of the season last Saturday, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings.

Brewers' Matt Garza: Not starting Wednesday
Garza will not start Wednesday's game against the Pirates.
The Brewers will instead give the ball to Chase Anderson on short rest and presumably use Thursday's off day to skip Garza this time through the rotation. With Jimmy Nelson (shoulder) out for the rest of the season, Garza should return to a starting role in the near future, but he's firmly out of the discussion in mixed leagues.

Garza (6-9) gave up five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over 2.2 innings in a losing effort against the Reds on Wednesday.
The Brewers were hoping that an extended rest between appearances would lead to better results for Garza, but that wasn't the case. While he managed to keep the Reds off the board through two, Garza fell apart in the third, allowing four straight hits followed by a walk. Milwaukee could turn elsewhere -- possibly to Brent Suter or Junior Guerra -- the next time through the rotation.

Garza has struggled mightily over his past five starts, compiling a 9.28 ERA and 15:16 K:BB over 21.1 innings of work, so the Brewers will skip his next turn in the rotation as they allow the 33-year-old to gather himself. It's unclear who will start in his place Sunday, but Brent Suter (shoulder) and Junior Guerra appear to be the likely options. While Counsell hasn't confirmed when Garza will make his next start, he said he expects the veteran right-hander to see some starts in in September as the Brewers continue to reshuffle their rotation.

Garza (6-8) was slashed for six runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks over just 3.1 innings in a 10-2 loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday.
If at some point this season fantasy owners expected help from the 33-year-old Garza, his results in August should disabuse them of that notion. The veteran wrapped up the season's penultimate month with a 7.67 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 19:18 K:BB over 27 innings spanning six starts, even with a pair of one-run outings to his credit. His surprisingly decent work in the first half is a distant memory at this point.

Brewers' Matt Garza: Will retain starting role
Brewers manager Craig Counsell said that Garza will remain in the team's rotation for the time being, putting the right-hander in line to start Sunday against the Nationals, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Garza lasted just 3.1 innings and gave up six runs (three earned) in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals, following his trend of poor form in the second half. Over eight starts since the All-Star break, Garza has submitted an ugly 6.32 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 24:24 K:BB over 37 innings, putting his standing in the rotation on shaky ground. The Brewers are expected to recall Brandon Woodruff from Triple-A Colorado Springs to start Saturday against the Nationals, and if he performs well in that outing and Garza struggles in his subsequent turn Sunday, Counsell may revisit his plans for the starting staff. Brent Suter (shoulder) is expected to return from the 10-day disabled list within the next week, which would offer the Brewers another alternative to Garza.

This was a solid rebound showing from Garza. He had allowed 20 runs through just 13 innings over his previous three starts, and even with one of those outings at hitter-friendly Coors Field, it was a rough stretch for the veteran. With a 4.67 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 6.2 K/9 for the campaign, Garza is far from a go-to fantasy asset. However, he can reward against weak opponents. He lines up to face the Cardinals at Miller Park in his next start.

Garza (6-7) served up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings as he took the loss Friday against the Rockies.
Garza was hammered at Coors Field, as the Rockies touched him up for three home runs. This marks the second time in Garza's past three starts that he has given up at least three bombs, and he has watched his ERA balloon from 3.68 to 4.81 in that short span. Getting away from Coors Field should help Garza, but this is his third straight season with a HR/9 of at least 1.0, so it may not be a problem that will ever disappear entirely.

Control was an issue for Garza throughout this one, as he set a new season high in walks while also hitting a batter and allowing a run to score on a wild pitch. Despite the underwhelming performance, the veteran righty was able to even his record thanks to seven runs of offensive support in the first five innings. His K/9 fell to a measly 6.05 after this game, so Garza will have almost no upside in his next start Saturday at Colorado's hitter-friendly Coors Field.

Brewers' Matt Garza: Battered by Twins
Garza (5-6) allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks over 3.1 innings during Tuesday's loss to the Twins. He struck out three.
Garza posted scoreless frames in the first and second innings before allowing a pair of runs to come across in the third. Things completely fell apart in the fourth for the veteran, as he served up three home runs in the inning, including a grand slam to Brian Dozier. Garza entered Tuesday's game with a respectable 3.68 ERA, but exited with a more telling 4.34 ERA. He'll look to bounce back in his upcoming start against the Reds on Sunday.

Garza (5-5) allowed a single run on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters through 5.2 innings during Thursday's win over St. Louis.
Garza needed a stint on the disabled list following his previous start (July 21), but proved he had recovered from the lower leg strain that caused him to miss a start with a solid outing Thursday. For the year, the veteran righty boasts an admirable 3.68 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, but his 6.1 K/9 leaves a lot to be desired. There are still plenty of deep settings where he's a serviceable fantasy asset, though. A road date against the Twins is up next for Garza.

Garza returns to the mound after needing a brief stay on the DL with a right lower leg strain that caused him to miss one start. The 33-year-old's bullpens have gone well over the past week, and he should be able pitch without any strict limitations. Even if manager Craig Counsell decides to keep Garza on a pitch count, the right-hander has only been able to last past the sixth inning on three occasions this season, and just once since May 6. The Brewers optioned Wei-Chung Wang back to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Wednesday in order to clear up a roster spot for Garza.
