Mariners' Micah Owings: Agrees to minor league contract with Mariners
Owings signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on Monday, Jesse Burkhart of Today's Knuckleball reports.
Owings is well-known for his attempts to land in the major leagues as both a pitcher and as an outfielder, but this tie around, the right-hander will try to make Seattle's Opening Day roster as a pitcher. Owings has decent career numbers as a pitcher, but it should be noted that he hasn't pitched with a major league organization since 2012, filling the time since then pitching in an independent league. This could work against him as he works to garner a roster spot, but his effectiveness should become apparent as he gets reps during spring training.
