Darwin Barney: Transitions to coaching
Barney was announced Thursday as the manager for the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.
Barney had been out of baseball since being released by Texas in spring training in 2018, so the move to coaching signals the end of his playing career. Known primarily for his defensive abilities, Barney won his lone Gold Glove award in 2012 and slashed .246/.294/.341 across 814 games between the Cubs, Dodgers and Blue Jays.

Darwin Barney: Granted release from Rangers
Barney was granted his release from the Rangers on Monday.
As expected, Barney will now be free to sign elsewhere after being cut loose by the Rangers. The 32-year-old hit an unimpressive .232/.275/.327 across 129 games with the Blue Jays last year, but he still offers solid defense across the infield, which could help him latch on somewhere else.

Rangers' Darwin Barney: Requests release
Barney requested his release from the Rangers on Monday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic Dallas reports.
Barney is no longer in camp, though the Rangers apparently still haven't granted the infielder his release at this point. He was competing for a utility role with Texas, but will be forced to look now look for major-league opportunities elsewhere (assuming his release is granted). Rangers' Darwin Barney: Spring invite with Rangers
Barney signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Monday which includes an invitation to spring training.
Multiple injuries around Toronto's infield allowed Barney to start 96 games for the Blue Jays in 2017, though he struggled to make an impact and finished the season with a lackluster .232/.275/.327 line across 363 plate appearances. While he doesn't offer much from an offensive standpoint, Barney's glove continues to keep him around the major-league level. As a result, he'll get a chance to break camp with the Rangers in a utility role, though he won't carry any fantasy value even if he does so.

Blue Jays' Darwin Barney: Goes deep Tuesday
Barney went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Royals.
Barney opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the sixth inning and added an RBI single in the next frame. The long ball was only Barney's fifth in 119 games, and he's unlikely to move out of the bottom third of Toronto's order any time soon judging by his .237/.272/.330 line.

For the second consecutive day, Barney is being withheld from the lineup and giving way to Ryan Goins at second base. Although he's hitting just .237/.273/.322 for the season, Barney has shown a bit more life at the plate recently as he's pieced together a .389 batting average over 36 at-bats since the start of September.

Barney has an impressive eight hits over his last three games, but he'll head to the bench for a breather after starting seven consecutive contests. Ryan Goins will slide over to second base in his stead, opening up a spot for Richard Urena to start at shortstop. If Urena continues to impress, he could cut into the workload of Barney and Goins down the stretch.

After starting the last seven games in the infield, Barney seems to have seized control of a regular role, but he'll be given the day off Sunday as manager John Gibbons goes with Richard Urena at second base in what will mark the 21-year-old's first career MLB start. If Urena impresses Sunday, he could cut into Barney's workload more regularly in the final month of the season.

After Blue Jays manager John Gibbons recently elected to use Josh Donaldson at shortstop and Jose Bautista at third base more regularly, it appeared Barney would be squeezed out of an everyday role in the middle infield. However, with Donaldson starting at the hot corner for the fourth time in five games Sunday, Barney seems to have regained a foothold in the Jays' lineup. Even so, with a .223/.267/.295 line for the season and a lack of impact in the counting-stats categories, it will be difficult for Barney to return value outside of AL-only formats even if he retains regular at-bats the rest of the way.

Blue Jays' Darwin Barney: Dropped from lineup Tuesday
Barney is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Rays, Laura Armstrong of the Toronto Star reports.
For the second straight game, Barney will hit the bench while Josh Donaldson mans shortstop, which could be a common occurrence over the final month-plus of the season while manager John Gibbons looks to find room for both Donaldson and Jose Bautista in the infield. If that's the case, it will likely come at the expense of Barney, a versatile defender who profiles better as a utility man than an everyday option. The 31-year-old is batting a meager .220/.266/.295 over 258 plate appearances on the season.

Since he's recorded only one hit over the last seven games and owns a pedestrian .215/.272/.271 line for the season, Barney's increased playing time won't mean much for fantasy purposes.
