Koji Uehara: Playing days over
Uehara plans to announce his retirement from professional baseball Monday, Jim Allen of Kyodo News reports.
After a successful decade-long run in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball to begin his professional career, Uehera made the leap to North America in 2009, signing a two-year deal with Baltimore. While seeing action with the Orioles, Rangers, Red Sox and Cubs over the next nine years, Uehara was one of the majors' most productive relievers, notching 95 saves and posting a 2.66 ERA and 26.5 K-BB% over 436 appearances. The 44-year-old returned to Japan after the 2017 campaign and has continued to work in a relief role for the Yomiuri Giants, but it appears he's now ready to close the book on a storied career. In addition to his achievements in the MLB, Uehara was an eight-time NPB All-Star.

Koji Uehara: Returning to Japan
Uehara signed with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan on Friday, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxonline.com reports.
The 42-year-old pitched for four teams in nine seasons since coming to America in 2009. He'll end his major-league career with a 2.66 ERA and 95 saves in 480.2 innings. His 79 saves for Boston rank seventh in Red Sox history.

Koji Uehara: Plans to retire if not offered MLB contract
Uehara stated that he will retire if he doesn't receive a major-league offer before the season begins, Kyodo News reports.
Uehara will turn 43 in March and is unsure that he'll get a major-league offer before spring training starts. The right-hander pitched for the Cubs last season, appearing in 49 games and accruing a 3.98 ERA across 43.0 innings. If he's not offered a major-league contract, Uehara will call it quits after 10 seasons in Japan and 10 years of MLB service.

Cubs' Koji Uehara: Remains unavailable
Uehara (knee/back) will not be available Saturday against the Cardinals, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
The 42-year-old has been dealing with an infection in his right knee, and manager Joe Maddon revealed Saturday that Uehara is also nursing a back issue. Uehara has not pitched in a game since Sept. 2 and it's uncertain when he may be able to return to active competition.

Uehara is dealing with a right knee infection, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
He threw a simulated game Wednesday, but it is unclear when he will be able to return to game action. Uehara has not pitched since Sept. 2, so this helps explain his absence. The 42-year-old righty has a 3.98 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 43 innings this season and will be a free agent after the year.

He only missed two weeks with the neck ailment. Look for Uehara to resume a low-to-mid-leverage role for the Cubs. He has a 3.55 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in 38 innings this season.

Cubs' Koji Uehara: Will throw another bullpen Friday
Uehara (neck) is set to toss his second bullpen in the last three days prior to Chicago's game against the Blue Jays on Friday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Uehara felt fine following his initial bullpen session Wednesday, which marked the first time he toed the rubber since landing on the DL on Aug. 9. If all goes well during Friday's appearance, the right-hander could return to the club during their road trip in Cincinnati next week.

Uehara came on in relief in the seventh inning but left the field alongside the team trainer with an apparent injury after allowing a walk and a single to the first two batters he faced. We'll await word from the Cubs as to the exact nature of his injury.

Despite some encouraging initial reports regarding Uehara's injury, the Cubs decided to make the DL move, citing his age and level of discomfort as reasons to be proactive. Uehara was pulled from Tuesday's appearance with neck stiffness after allowing the first two batters he faced to reach base. Justin Grimm was recalled in a corresponding move.

The 42-year-old allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base before exiting the game with a trainer. Hector Rondon, meanwhile, was unavailable due to back stiffness. Neither issue is considered serious, but if Uehara and Rondon both need more time, it will leave the Cubs' bullpen a bit thin for Wednesday's series finale.

Cubs' Koji Uehara: Picks up second save Sunday
Uehara stuck out two in a clean ninth inning Sunday against St. Louis to pick up his second save of the year.
Cubs closer Wade Davis picked up saves on Friday and Saturday, so manager Joe Maddon decided to give him a rest Sunday. Uerhara's usage thus far puts him on track to log six saves and 21 holds while approaching 70 strikeouts -- numbers that can be useful in NL-only formats.

Uehara (1-3) was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Padres. He allowed an earned run on a walk and hit over one inning of work.
On a day in which the Cubs scored just one run, the run given up by Uehara in the eighth inning turned out to be costly. The veteran still sports a solid 3.63 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, to go along with 20 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.
