Travis Wood: Released by Tigers
Wood (knee) was released by the Tigers on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
This isn't all too surprising, as Wood is expected to miss the entire 2018 season after tearing his ACL and medial meniscus during his Grapefruit League debut last week. He's set to undergo surgery to repair his knee Wednesday, after which he'll turn his attention to getting ready for the 2019 season.

Tigers' Travis Wood: Faces surgery next week
Wood, who was spotted on crutches Saturday at Tigers' camp, said he is hoping to have surgery on his knee early next week, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Wood tore his ACL and medial meniscus in Thursday's spring training game while attempting to catch an opponent in a rundown between bases. The lefty, who joined Detroit in the offseason, is most likely out for the season and will turn his attention to rehabbing for 2019.

The injury occurred while Wood was attempting to catch an opposing player in a rundown during the third inning, and he fell to the ground in obvious pain. Beck notes that Wood is weighing surgical options, but it appears that the lefty's first season in a Detroit uniform has come to a very early end.

Tigers' Travis Wood: Leaves with apparent knee injury
Wood limped off the field after suffering an apparent knee injury during Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Braves, Anthony Fenech of the MLB Network reports.
Wood fell to the ground in obvious pain after attempting to catch an opposing player in a rundown during the third inning of Thursday's contest. He was able to get up and limp to the dugout, but manager Ron Gardenhire and head athletic trainer Doug Teter immediately ran out to check on him while he was writhing on the ground, according to Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group. The club released a statement that he exited with a left knee sprain, but there will likely be another update on his status in the coming days.

Tigers' Travis Wood: Cleared for spring debut
Wood (finger) will make an appearance in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Braves, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Wood has remained on a normal throwing program throughout the spring, but a January bow-hunting accident resulted in the 31-year-old entering camp with a splint on his index finger of his right (non-throwing) hand. The injury initially prevented Wood from fielding his position, but after getting the protection removed from his finger more than week ago, he was cleared to resume full activity. With Wood now ready to pitch in exhibition contests, he'll look to solidify a spot as a long reliever out of the Detroit bullpen.

Wood (finger) threw live batting practice Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Wood was previously unable to take part in catching and fielding drills during camp until he had pins removed Monday from his broken right index finger, which he injured in a January hunting accident. The lefty had been able to stay on track with his throwing program even while he was unable to catch, but now that he's able to defend his position, he shouldn't face any restrictions in his bid to win a back-end rotation spot or role as a long man out of the Detroit bullpen.

Tigers' Travis Wood: Gets splint removed
Wood had the splint on his right index finger removed Friday and isn't expected to face any limitations while playing catch during spring training, Katie Strang of The Athletic Detroit reports.
Since the injury was to his non-throwing hand, Wood, who required stitches for the digit following a January crossbow accident, had been able to throw bullpen sessions and take part in long toss when pitchers reported to camp last week, but was unable to don a glove while wearing the splint. After meeting with team doctors, Wood received the green light to remove the protection from his finger and looks like he'll now be able to proceed uninhibited in his quest for an Opening Day roster spot with Detroit. It's unlikely that Wood, a non-roster invitee, will merit serious consideration for the back end of the Tigers' rotation, but his existing familiarity with new pitching coach Chris Bosio from their time together with the Cubs along with Detroit's lack of lefty relief options could aid the 31-year-old's chances of claiming a bullpen gig.

Tigers' Travis Wood: Unable to catch while dealing with finger injury
Wood had a pin inserted into his right index finger following a January bow-hunting accident and is unable to catch, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Fortunately for the 31-year-old, the finger issue doesn't hinder him while he's throwing, so he should remain on a normal program throughout the spring as he looks to stake his claim to a spot at the back of the rotation or as a long man out of the bullpen. However, until he's able to ditch the splint on his finger and is cleared to resume catching and fielding, Wood's Grapefruit League debut could be delayed a bit.

Wood signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Monday which includes an invitation to spring training.
Wood has found a new home after being released by the Padres earlier in the offseason. The 30-year-old struggled mightily in 2017, posting a career-worst 6.80 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 94 innings split between the Royals and Padres. It appears he'll compete for a spot in the Tigers' rotation during spring after working as both a starter and reliever in 2017; there's a chance he winds up in the bullpen if he's unable to lock down a rotation spot. Regardless of his role, Wood will look to bounce back in 2018 with an ERA closer to his 4.26 career mark.

Wood (3-3) tossed six innings of two-run ball Tuesday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out three and picking up the win over the Diamondbacks.
Wood had given up 15 earned runs over his last two starts, so it's understandable if fantasy owners bypassed this surprising start against a dangerous Arizona lineup. It wasn't all roses for the veteran southpaw, as he gave up two more homers to bring his season average up to 1.8 HR/9 through 89.1 innings. Wood should be considered a low-end streaming option in his last scheduled start of the season against the Dodgers next Monday.

Padres' Travis Wood: Serves up nine runs in Tuesday's loss
Wood (3-6) was hit hard in Tuesday's loss to the Twins. He allowed a career-high nine runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.1 innings.
Wood allowed 10 baserunners and was only able to record five outs in Tuesday's disastrous outing. The 30-year-old has now allowed 15 earned runs over his past two starts and has raised his ERA to an unsightly 6.80 on the season. Padres' Travis Wood: Shelled in loss
Wood (2-2) lasted just two innings Tuesday, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in a losing effort against the Cardinals.
Wood was able to to hit a home run for the second consecutive start, but he also failed to complete five frames on the mound in both outings. The veteran southpaw has provided mixed results since joining the Padres' rotation (5.03 ERA), so it will be tough to trust him in his next start against the Twins next Monday.

Padres' Travis Wood: Limited by high pitch count
Wood danced around 10 baserunners (four walks) while holding the Giants scoreless over 4.1 innings Wednesday. He struck out one and did not factor into the decision in a 5-0 win.
Wood pitched in and out of trouble all night, but a high pitch count (97 pitches) led to an early hook and no win for his fantasy owners. The 30-year-old's poor control (4.1 BB/9) and susceptibility to the long ball (1.7) have limited his value in seven starts with the Padres. Wood shouldn't be considered anything more than a low-end streaming option in deep leagues when he takes on the Cardinals next Monday.
