Athletics' Simon Castro: Re-ups with A's
Castro agreed to a minor-league deal with the Athletics on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Simon signed a minor-league deal with the A's last offseason and split his time between Triple-A Nashville and the majors. He was effective in the minors (3.32 ERA over 38 innings) but less so in the bigs (4.38 ERA over 37 innings). He could work his way onto the Opening Day roster with a strong spring training performance.

Castro was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Castro saw plenty of time in the majors during the 2017 campaign. He pitched 37 innings over 26 games and finished the year with a 4.38 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. His control was lackluster, as he owned a 35:14 K:BB and gave up home runs at a lofty 1.7 HR/9 clip. Moving forward, Castro's fantasy value is fairly limited, as his performance to this point hasn't warranted use in high-leverage situations.

Athletics' Simon Castro: Unravels in Monday appearance
Castro allowed two earned runs on three hits over two-thirds of an inning in Monday's 8-3 win over the Tigers.
Castro was the first in a parade of relievers called upon following emergency starter Raul Alcantara's exit after 3.2 innings. The hard-throwing right-hander disposed of James McCann to finish out the fourth, but ran into trouble in the fifth by allowing RBI doubles to JaCoby Jones and Ian Kinsler. The results were par for the course for Castro, who's now surrendered a pair of earned runs in each of his last three appearances. Castro's rough stretch has bumped up his ERA from 2.88 to 4.55, even as he's generated an impressive nine strikeouts across 8.1 innings over that span.

Athletics' Simon Castro: Strong multi-inning stint in loss
Castro fired two scoreless innings in Tuesday's 8-2 loss to the Angels, allowing one hit and three walks. He struck out two.
The hard-throwing right-hander's final line represented a much-needed bounce-back from the four earned runs he'd surrendered over his previous trio of appearances. Castro did issue multiple free passes for the first time this season, but he also recorded multiple whiffs for the third straight outing. Despite his recent stumbles, his solid 3.09 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 21 strikeouts over 23.1 innings are helping to keep him relevant in deeper formats.

Castro (1-2) gave up a game-winning solo home run for his only hit and earned run over two-plus innings in Wednesday's 8-7 extra-inning loss to the Orioles. He also issued a walk and recorded three strikeouts.
Castro otherwise turned in a dominant 33-pitch appearance, but his one mistake against Manny Machado cost the Athletics the game. The 29-year-old right-hander has been scored upon in three straight appearances, allowing a total of four earned runs over the five innings encompassing that stretch. Although his ERA (3.43) and WHIP (0.95) remain solid, thanks to his performances earlier in the season, he's trending in the wrong direction as of late.

Athletics' Simon Castro: Joins big club in wake of trades
The Athletics selected Castro's contract from Triple-A Nashville on Sunday.
Castro will join the Athletics for what's likely a temporary basis to provide an extra arm out of the bullpen after relievers Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson were traded to the Nationals on Sunday. The Athletics did take back another bullpen arm in Blake Treinen back in the deal, so once Treinen joins the big club, Castro could be shipped back to Triple-A. Over 38 innings with Nashville this season, the 29-year-old has supplied a 3.32 ERA to go with an eye-popping 63 strikeouts.

Athletics' Simon Castro: Making impression with energy, performance
Castro, a hard-throwing non-roster invitee, has made an impression with his aggressiveness and performance over his first two spring appearances, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. "He's pretty passionate about what he does, and when he came to the mound, he was pretty vocal," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He was telling the guys, 'Let's go! Right now, let's go!' I haven't heard that too many times out of pitchers, let alone in Spring Training, so he impressed me with his eagerness to pitch and certainly was not scared and got the outs we needed."
The 28-year-old Dominican has been hard to miss when out on the mound, both for his demeanor and ability to successfully navigate difficult situations. Castro has a 1-0 record on the strength of a scoreless inning across two appearances, earning the win by getting two outs after inheriting a man on third in Monday's victory over the Giants. He also limited further damage in the second inning of the Cactus League opener by coming on in relief of Jesse Hahn after the latter had already given up three runs in the frame. The 6-foot-5 Castro has limited big league experience -- having posted a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 17 innings with the White Sox and Rockies in the 2013 and 2015 seasons -- but has built up a solid minor league resume following a transition to reliever after 2014 Tommy John surgery. Castro compiled an impressive 132 strikeouts over 110.1 innings at Triple-A Albuquerque during the 2015-16 campaigns and is arguably making the biggest impact of the 14 non-roster pitchers in Oakland camp this spring.

Castro signed a minor league contract with Oakland on Thursday that includes an invite to spring training, CSN Bay Area reports.
Castro put together a solid showing at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2016, where he was one of the club's most-used relievers, as he threw for a 3.38 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 53.1 innings (50 games). He also posted a 25.8 percent K-rate, which is well above his career average of 20 percent, and managed to walk batters at a career-low rate of 5.3 percent.

Castro was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports.
The Rockies trimmed their roster down to exactly 40 men Thursday with the move to option Castro down to Triple-A. Castro struck out four batters while allowing zero runs across 5.1 innings of work this spring. He figures to provide depth out of the bullpen at Albuquerque for most of the season.
