Darin Mastroianni: Released by Twins organization
Mastroianni was released by the Twins on Tuesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
The veteran appeared in only seven games for the big league club this season, failing to notch a hit in 11 plate appearances. He spent the bulk of the year at Triple-A, but with Byron Buxton back at Rochester, Mastroianni's services were no longer needed. The career .206 major league hitter will now look to latch on with another organization, likely on a minor league deal.

Twins' Darin Mastroianni: Activated from DL, outrighted off 40-man
Mastroianni (oblique) was activated from the DL on Monday, but the Twins outrighted him off the 40-man roster, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Mastroianni only fit in a brief showing with the Twins this season before landing on the disabled list in late May. When he attempted to start his rehab assignment in mid-June, he experienced a setback, pushing back his first rehab appearance to July 1. In three games with Triple-A Rochester in the meantime, the outfielder tallied at least one hit on each occasion, but the organization will instead turn in another direction with his 40-man roster spot.

Twins' Darin Mastroianni: Begins rehab assignment
Mastroianni begins his rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports
Mastroianni has been hampered by an oblique injury that's kept him out of games since May 21. The outfielder began running sprints and playing catch several weeks ago so he should be nearing 100 percent at this point. The 30-year-old will likely participate in a few tune up games with Minnesota's Triple-A affiliate and could return to the majors early next week.

Twins' Darin Mastroianni: Making progress in recovery from oblique injury
Mastroianni (oblique) ran straight-ahead sprints at 75 percent and played catch at 90 feet out Tuesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
He is making tangible progress from an oblique injury, but Mastroianni still has several important hurdles to clear. While he's also swung a bat underwater without issue, he will need to take dry swings and hit flip-toss before progressing to batting practice and ultimately a rehab assignment.

Twins' Darin Mastroianni: Placed on disabled list with oblique injury
Mastroianni was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left oblique injury, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Mastroianni logged nine at-bats in seven appearances in the majors this season before injuring his oblique, recording two walks, zero hits and four strikeouts. Mastroianni provided direly needed outfield depth for the Twins, but it's not a lock that he'll have a 25-man spot waiting for him once healthy.

Twins' Darin Mastroianni: Called up to majors Friday
Mastroianni was called up from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Mastroianni hasn't been spectacular at the Triple-A level this season, as he holds a lowly .208 batting average and is striking out 22.1% of the time. However, he is walking at a 14.7% clip and can play each outfield position, which was enough to warrant a roster move. Despite the vote of confidence, he'll likely be limited to being a reserve outfielder for the Twins.

Twins' Darin Mastroianni: Having productive spring
Mastroianni is hitting .300 (6-for-20) in 14 games this spring.
The Twins have three veteran outfielders on minor league deals playing well this spring -- Mastroianni, Carlos Quentin and Ryan Sweeney -- but it seems unlikely any of them will make the 25-man roster over Oswaldo Arcia, who is out of minor league options. Mastroianni will likely add depth for the Twins at Triple-A Rochester, but could find a reserve job in the majors at some point this season.

Twins' Darin Mastroianni: Signs minor league contract with Twins
Mastroianni signed a minor league contract with the Twins on Tuesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Mastroianni played in both the Phillies and Nationals organizations last season, batting .257 between their respective Triple-A affiliates. He also hit 26 doubles and had 25 steals at Lehigh Valley and Syracuse. Mastroianni hasn't been in the majors since 2014, but his speed and solid defense could help him be a good piece of organizational depth in his return to the Twins organization.
