Diamondbacks' Rey Fuentes: Returns from DL
Fuentes (finger) has started the past four games for Triple-A Reno, collecting four hits and four walks across 18 plate appearances.
Fuentes was sidelined for the first month and a half of the Pacific Coast League season after suffering a small fracture on one of the fingers on his left hand during spring training. Prior to sustaining the injury, the Diamondbacks removed Fuentes from their 40-man roster, so the veteran outfielder probably won't be a leading candidate for a promotion to the big leagues even if Steven Souza (pectoral) joins A.J. Pollock (thumb) on the 10-day disabled list.

Triple-A Reno placed Fuentes (finger) on its 7-day disabled list prior to their season opener April 5.
Fuentes suffered a small fracture on a knuckle on his left hand late in spring training, keeping him on the shelf for the beginning of the season. The organization hasn't outlined a clear timetable for Fuentes' return. The 27-year-old was dropped from Arizona's 40-man roster in February and will thus have a more difficult path back to the big leagues after appearing in 64 games for the Diamondbacks in 2017.

Diamondbacks' Rey Fuentes: Sent back to minors camp
The Diamondbacks reassigned Fuentes (finger) to their minor-league camp Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Fuentes had been attending camp as a non-roster invitee after the Diamondbacks outrighted him to Triple-A Reno in February. Even though Arizona will be down an outfielder to begin the season with Steven Souza (pectoral) on the disabled list, Fuentes didn't warrant any late consideration for a spot on the Opening Day roster while he dealt with his own finger injury. Manager Torey Lovullo revealed Sunday that Fuentes is recovering from a small fracture on his left hand, which could keep the outfielder at extended spring training when the Pacific Coast League season opens.

Fuentes is dealing with a small fracture on a knuckle on his left hand, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
It was previously reported that Fuentes was simply dealing with a bruised left hand, but manager Torey Lovullo has now confirmed that it's a bit more serious than that. It's unclear if this fracture will affect Fuentes' regular-season availability. He should be considered day-to-day.

Fuentes hasn't appeared in any spring games since being struck on the left hand by a pitch Monday. The outfielder escaped with no structural damage to his hand and is merely dealing with a bruise, so his availability for the start of the season wouldn't seem to be at much risk. X-rays came back negative on Fuentes' left hand after the outfielder departed from Monday's 15-2 exhibition loss to the White Sox following a hit by pitch, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.

Fuentes went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run Thursday in the Diamondbacks' 11-6 win over the Brewers in Cactus League play.
The home run was Fuentes' third of the Cactus League, boosting his OPS to a ridiculous 1.375 across 11 games. The 27-year-old was a spring standout the last two years as well, only to deliver a combined .254/.298/.339 regular-season slash line at the major-league level over that span. With Fuentes having been outrighted off the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster in February, it's likely that he'll open the season at Triple-A Reno rather than serving as a depth outfielder for the big club.

Fuentes' long ball put the Diamondbacks on the board for the first time all evening, but it didn't end up amounting to much with his team trailing 8-0 at the time. Fuentes (thumb) has appeared in 13 games during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno, going 13-for-47 (.277 average) with five doubles and four stolen bases.
Fuentes' left thumb contusion doesn't appear to be an issue any longer, but since the Diamondbacks don't have a pressing need for him on the big-league roster, it appears the team will keep him on the rehab assignment for close to the full 20 days permitted before activating him from the 10-day disabled list. The 26-year-old is a strong candidate to rejoin the Diamondbacks in September when rosters expand, but may only make a couple of starts and instead make most of his appearances as a late-inning defensive replacement or pinch runner.

This comes as a bit of a surprise given that Fuentes knocked a pitch out of the park Tuesday night for a three-run pinch-hit homer. It's unclear how severe this issue is, but a timetable for his return should come forth as he ramps up activity. He's eligible to return on July 29.

There haven't been many opportunities there for him lately -- Fuentes had sat out four straight games before this one -- but he did get a second at-bat Tuesday, as he stayed in to play center field after hitting his homer. Now 26, Fuentes has flashed a solid bat and intriguing speed in the minors, but he's never carved out a full-time role in the big leagues, and that seems destined to continue. With the D-Backs just having added J.D. Martinez via trade, there's even less playing time available in their outfield now.

Fuentes went 0-for-4 in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers.
Fuentes, who was making just his second start in seven games, has now failed to record a hit in his last nine at-bats. Now that A.J. Pollock is healthy again following an extended stint on the disabled list due to a groin issue, Fuentes doesn't project to receive much usage off the Arizona bench and could soon be headed back to Triple-A Reno.
