  • Padres' Manny Machado: Belts second homer

Machado went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Cubs. The blast shouldn't have happened, as Machado popped up two balls in foul territory during the same at-bat, but he got reprieves each time when they were dropped by Kyle Tucker and Gage Workman. Machado took full advantage of the extra chance, driving the ninth pitch he saw from Shota Imanaga over the fence in left-center field. It was Machado's second long ball of the season in 18 games, and the 32-year-old has had an overall strong start to the campaign, slashing .313/.387/.507 with six steals, seven RBI and 16 runs.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Swats first 2025 homer

Machado went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 10-4 loss to the A's. The third baseman took Jeffrey Springs deep in the first inning -- Machado's first long ball of the year. He's had a strong start to the campaign overall, slashing .319/.360/.489 through 12 games with five doubles, five RBI, nine runs and five steals on five attempts.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Running often in early going

Machado went 3-for-5 with a stolen base in Monday's 7-2 win against Cleveland. Machado was removed early from Saturday's game against Atlanta due to calf tightness, but the issue doesn't seem to be bothering him, as he swiped second base in the fifth inning Monday. The veteran third baseman has been active on the basepaths in the early part of the season, as he now has three thefts in five contests. Machado notched a modest 11 stolen bases during the regular season last year, and that was the first time in three campaigns that he had reached the double-digit mark.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Good to go Sunday

Machado (calf) is starting at third base and batting third Sunday against Atlanta, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The 32-year-old departed Saturday's contest due to right calf tightness, but his presence in the lineup Sunday indicates it's not a serious concern. Machado went 2-for-3 with a double and two walks in the season opener, though he's gone 0-for-6 with a strikeout in the past two games.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Exits game due to calf tightness

Machado was removed from Saturday's game against Atlanta due to right calf tightness, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Machado appeared to injure himself on a swing in the bottom of the fourth inning. He was able to finish the at-bat but limped off the field and was replaced by Jose Iglesias at third base for the top of the fifth. Machado will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury, per Cassavell.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Swipes two bags in opener

Machado went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases in Thursday's 7-4 win over Atlanta. Machado served as a catalyst in San Diego's Opening Day victory with some unexpected base-stealing ability. While the stolen bases are nice, they're not likely to be a major facet of Machado's game in his age-32 season. He swiped 11 bags in 2024 while posting a .275/.325/.472 slash line with 29 home runs and 105 RBI.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Belts second spring homer

Machado went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a Cactus League win against the Reds on Saturday. Machado accounted for the only run in the contest with a 389-foot solo shot in the seventh inning. It was the veteran slugger's second long ball of the spring, and just his third RBI. Machado is slashing a modest .200/.250/.433 during the exhibition slate, but unlike last spring, he's been able to play the field regularly. He was limited to DH duties during most of the first month of the regular season last year after undergoing offseason elbow surgery, but that issue is long behind him, and Machado is slated to start at the hot corner on Opening Day against Atlanat on Thursday

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Making return Tuesday

Machado (back) will start at third base and bat cleanup in Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Giants. As anticipated, Machado will make his return to the lineup for the first time since last Tuesday, after a bout with back tightness prompted the Padres to hold him out. The fact that the Padres are deploying Machado in the field Tuesday rather than at designated hitter suggests that the team doesn't have much concern about the back issue being something that will require extra management throughout the spring.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Scratched from Friday's lineup

Machado has been scratched from Friday's spring training game against the Mariners due to back tightness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The injury isn't considered serious, and Acee relays that Machado's removal from Friday's lineup is purely precautionary. It's possible that the 32-year-old Machado will be held out of the Padres' next couple of games to truly manage the injury. Eguy Rosario will take Machado's place at third base and bat eighth.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Had fully healthy offseason

Machado is 100 percent at the beginning of spring training following his first normal offseason in a couple years, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Machado dealt with lingering tennis elbow during the 2023 campaign as well as that offseason and then last winter was recovering from surgery to repair the elbow. This was the first time he was able to have a normal offseason routine since prior to the 2022 season and that year he slashed .298/.366/.531 while finishing runner-up in the National League MVP voting. Machado was still quite productive each of the last two years, but his numbers could be due for an uptick in 2025.

Unless he comes in to pinch hit, Machado will end the regular season having slashed .275/.325/.472 with 11 stolen bases, 29 home runs and 105 RBI across 643 plate appearances. Tyler Wade will start at third base Sunday and bat eighth.

The third baseman has put together a strong September, going 21-for-66 (.318) with six home runs, 21 RBI, eight runs scored and two steals over 16 games.
