There was speculation that the return for former-first rounder Jesse Biddle was not just a player to be named later, and that speculation proved to be correct. With the Pirates claiming A.J Schugel off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, the club needed to clear space on its 40-man roster and did so by designating Medina. He made 17 appearances last season as a member of the Mariners and Cubs, working a 4.71 ERA with 16 strikeouts and 11 walks over 21.0 innings.
