Kelvin Herrera: Hangs up cleats
Herrera announced his retirement on his personal Twitter page Friday.
The 31-year-old calls it quits after spending a decade in the big leagues. He'll finish with 61 saves and a 3.21 ERA in 513.2 innings of work for the Royals, Nationals and White Sox. He'll be remembered most for his time as part of the dominant trio of late-inning arms alongside Wade Davis and Greg Holland that carried the Royals to back-to-back pennants and a World Series title in the middle of the last decade. He posted a 1.26 ERA in 28.2 postseason innings during those two years.

Cubs' Kelvin Herrera: Lands minor-league deal with Cubs
Herrera signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Thursday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
After posting a 6.54 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 53.2 innings with the White Sox over the past two seasons, Herrera was designated for assignment and subsequently released. The right-hander will now report to the Cubs' alternate training site as part of the team's 60-man roster. Although the team's major-league bullpen has struggled to begin the year, Herrera would have to demonstrate increased production during his time in South Bend if he hopes to return to the majors during the shortened 2020 campaign.

Kelvin Herrera: Cut loose
The White Sox requested waivers for Herrera on Sunday for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.
After Chicago designated Herrera for assignment, no team was willing to scoop him up off waivers, which doesn't come as a surprise given that the two-time All-Star was owed $8.5 million in 2020 and would need to be bought out for another $1 million in 2021. Rather than retaining Herrera as part of their 60-man roster pool, the White Sox will part ways with the 30-year-old entirely following a rough two-year stint with the club. Over his 59 appearances spanning this season and last, Herrera posted a 6.54 ERA (4.94 FIP) in 53.2 innings.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: DFA'd by White Sox
Herrera was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday.
The veteran right-hander last appeared in Sunday's contest and surrendered four runs over two innings, which appears to have been the final straw for Chicago. Herrera signed a two-year, $18 million contract in January 2019, but he struggled last season with a 6.14 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 53:23 K:BB over 51.1 innings.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: Expected member of bullpen
Herrera is expected to make the White Sox as a member of the bullpen, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Herrera opened the 2019 season as a setup man with potential to steal saves from Alex Colome, but he didn't last long in that role. He walked too many batters and opponents had an .857 OPS off the right-hander during the first half of the season. He blamed a foot injury suffered in September of 2018 that lingered into 2019. That left the White Sox searching for better setup men, which they eventually found in Aaron Bummer and Evan Marshall. Herrera will primarily pitch in the middle innings and other low-leverage spots until he can prove his career-worst 6.14 ERA in 2019 was a fluke.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: Blames foot surgery for down year
Herrera attributed his career-worst 6.14 ERA in 2019 to the aftereffects of foot surgery he underwent in September of 2018, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
It's fair to assume the White Sox expected more out of Herrera when he signed a two-year, $18 million contract prior to the 2019 season. The optimist will look at the two-time All Star's 1.76 ERA over the final 15 games and see a reliever that can help the back end of the bullpen.

Herrera (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game against the A's.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: Another rehab outing on tap
Herrera (oblique) is scheduled for another rehab appearance with Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Herrera struggled in his first rehab appearance with the Knights, but he bounced back and fired a scoreless inning while recording a strikeout Tuesday against Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. If everything goes off without a hitch Thursday, Herrera -- who has been sidelined since June 20 with an oblique injury -- could be cleared to rejoin the White Sox shortly thereafter.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: Begins rehab assignment
Herrera (oblique) made his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, working an inning and giving up four runs on five hits.
Herrera needed 22 pitches to record the three outs and surrendered three extra-base hits -- including two home runs -- in his first competitive outing since July 17. Needless to say, the White Sox will probably want to see Herrera show improved command in subsequent minor-league outings before bringing him back from the 10-day injured list.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: Scheduled for bullpen
Herrera (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
This is an encouraging sign for Herrera, who landed on the injured list over the weekend with a right oblique strain. It remains to be seen whether the right-hander will require a rehab assignment before rejoining the White Sox, though that will likely depend on how he responds as he progresses through his throwing program.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: Lands on IL with oblique injury
The White Sox placed Herrera on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right oblique strain, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Oblique injuries often linger therefore carry volatile recovery timetables, so it wouldn't be surprising if Herrera was on the shelf beyond the minimum amount of time. The former Royals closer hadn't pitched since Wednesday and has been abysmal in a setup role this season, posting a 7.36 ERA and 1.82 WHIP across 33 innings. The White Sox recalled Jimmy Cordero from Triple-A Charlotte to provide the team with another arm in the bullpen.

White Sox's Kelvin Herrera: Returns to action

Herrera, who missed time since Sunday with a back issue, came on in the bottom of the ninth inning with a man on and served up a walkoff bomb to Jose Ramirez. It was the sixth time in the last nine appearances he's allowed runs. After a hopeful start to 2019, Herrera now has a 5.82 ERA and 17:6 K:BB over 17 innings.
