Padres' Erik Johnson: Makes first appearance since elbow surgery
Johnson (elbow) made his 2018 debut for Double-A San Antonio on Monday, tossing a perfect inning in relief in the affiliate's 9-1 win over Northwest Arkansas.
It was Johnson's first appearance in affiliated ball in two seasons after he was sidelined for all of 2017 while recovering from October 2016 Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was formerly a well-regarded starting pitching prospect in the White Sox organization and made 22 career starts in the big leagues, but it appears the Padres will transition him to a bullpen role coming off the major arm injury.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Returns to Padres on minor league deal
Johnson (elbow) signed a minor league contract with the Padres on Friday, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.
The right-hander will miss the entire 2017 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Johnson has posted a 5.28 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 22 career starts at the major league level.

Erik Johnson: Non-tendered by Padres
The Padres declined to tender Johnson (elbow) a contract Friday, making him a free agent, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
This was a given, as Johnson underwent Tommy John surgery in October and is set to miss the entire 2017 campaign. Johnson was hit hard in six starts between Chicago and San Diego last season, giving up a whopping 14 home runs in just 31.1 innings.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Johnson (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday with Dr. James Andrews, the San Diego Union-Tribune's Dennis Lin reports.
He was placed on the 60-day disabled list in mid-August with what at the time was considered a flexor strain. This is obviously a worse prognosis. The right-hander flashed moments of fantasy utility in his career with the White Sox but gave up 20 earned runs in only 19.2 innings with the Padres in 2016. Don't expect him to have a chance to improve on that until after the upcoming season.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Moved to 60-day DL
Johnson was moved to the 60-day DL on Monday, Bill Center of Padres.com reports.
San Diego's move opened a roster spot for the newly acquired Luis Sardinas. The team has yet to indicate when Johnson will return; however, he has yet to begin throwing since being diagnosed with an elbow strain.

Padres' Erik Johnson: MRI reveals flexor strain, sidelined 3-to-6 weeks
An MRI on Johnson's elbow Saturday revealed a flexor strain and he is expected to miss 3-to-6 weeks, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The recently acquired righty struggled during his first five starts with the Padres, notching an 8.76 ERA to go with a 1.95 WHIP while allowing a staggering 11 home runs in 24.2 innings before landing on the DL. With Saturday's diagnosis, Johnson will be out until at least late July and he could be sidelined well into August. Given his performance as a starter, he may not return to the rotation immediately upon his activation from the disabled list.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Has been placed on disabled list
Johnson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday.
The move to the disabled list was made retroactive to June 29, so Johnson will be eligible to return to the club after the All-Star Break on July 15. It was reported Wednesday that Johnson would either be bumped from the rotation or that the Padres would utilize a six-man rotation since Andrew Cashner will be activated off the DL on Sunday, but now he will take Johnson's spot.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Could lose rotation spot next week
The Padres will either bump Johnson from the rotation next week or continue with a six-man rotation, MLB.com's AJ Cassavell reports.
Andrew Cashner is set to be activated from the DL on Sunday, meaning the Padres have some decisions to make. Johnson has a 8.33 ERA in six big league starts this year, so it's easy to see him getting bounced from the rotation, if not next week, then soon after the All-Star break. Either way, he's not much of a fantasy option in the vast majority of formats.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Gives up four runs in fourth loss
Johnson (0-4) allowed four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over five innings in a loss Tuesday to the Orioles.
Johnson gave up two more home runs and has now allowed 14 in just six starts. He has a 4.0 HR/9, and frankly it's a miracle his ERA is as low as 8.33 considering how hard hitters are punishing his mistakes with regularity this season.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Change of scenery not working well
Johnson (0-5) was bombed Wednesday for the third time in three starts as a Padre, giving up six runs on nine hits in four innings in a loss to the Orioles. He struck out three and walked one.
Johnson was bad with the White Sox before coming over in the James Shields deal, and he's been just as bad with San Diego. Indeed, he's taken the loss in all five of his starts this yea and given up a horrifying seven homers in just 26.1 innings. The 26-year-old has had a good amount of success in the minors, but he's showing no signs at all of putting it together in the major leagues. Until he does, he's waiver-wire material in nearly all fantasy formats.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Gives up three homers Thursday
Johnson (0-2) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Nationals.
Johnson gave up three homers, which accounted for four of the five runs he allowed, and the Padres' offense was only able to get within one run of the Nationals before fizzling out and saddling him with the loss. Since coming over from the White Sox, he's allowed 10 runs in 10.2 innings of work over two starts to give him an 8.44 ERA with the Padres. He'll make his next start Wednesday at the Orioles.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Hit hard in first Padres start
Johnson (0-1) surrendered nine hits, five earned runs and two walks over 4.2 innings in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Rockies. He struck out three.
The 26-year-old righty, just recalled to take Andrew Cashner's (neck) spot in the rotation during the latter's DL stint, ran into some of the same trouble he'd experienced in his previous stints with the White Sox over the last three-plus seasons. Johnson got off on the wrong foot by yielding a three-run shot to Carlos Gonzalez in the first inning, and then saw Charlie Blackmon take him deep for a solo job in the fifth. He issued a pair of free passes as well, which has also been a staple of his prior performances. He admittedly drew a tough assignment for his first game in a Padres uniform in the form of Coors Field, and will look to bounce back in the more pitcher-friendly environment of Petco Park next Thursday versus the Nationals.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Officially recalled for Saturday's start
Johnson has been officially recalled by the Padres to start Saturday against Colorado, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Johnson will take Andrew Cashner's spot on the active roster after Cashner was placed on the DL on Saturday due to a strained neck. However, Johnson will have a bit of a trial by fire for his Padres debut as he'll be facing a dangerous Rockies lineup in the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field.

Johnson is having a solid year for Triple-A Lake Elsinore, touting a 2.94 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP in 49 innings of work. With the trade of James Shields to the White Sox, Johnson will take his departed position in the rotation. During two starts with the Padres this season, Johnson allowed nine earned runs and 14 hits in 11.2 innings, to go along with 11 strikeouts and six walks given up. He will earn another chance with his start against the Rockies on Saturday.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Favorite to start for Padres on Friday
Johnson appears the favorite to start in the Padres' weekend series in Colorado but could receive a couple innings with High-A Lake Elsinore prior to that, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
The departure of James Shields via trade to the White Sox vacated a spot in the Padres' rotation, and it appears Johnson could immediately lay claim to that spot. The 26-year-old has had success in limited spurts at the major league level but surrendered nine runs over 11.2 innings in two starts with the White Sox earlier this season. However, he pitched well at Triple-A and possesses a strikeout rate (7.1 K/9 in 18 MLB starts) that could provide some fantasy upside if he can lower his ERA to a respectable number.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Optioned to Triple-A
Johnson was optioned to Triple-A El Paso following his acquisition Saturday from the White Sox, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Though the Padres have a vacancy in their rotation with James Shields heading to the White Sox, manager Andy Green will go with long reliever Luis Perdomo in Shields' place Sunday. However, Perdomo is sporting an ERA over 10 on the season, and probably profiles better as a bullpen arm at this point, so it might not be long before Johnson gets a chance to claim the No. 5 spot. According to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell, Green has already said there's a "pretty good possibility" that Johnson takes Shields' spot in the rotation long-term, so if the 26-year-old quickly thrives at El Paso, a promotion could be imminent.

Padres' Erik Johnson: Dealt to Padres in Shields deal
Johnson was traded to the Padres on Saturday as part of a deal that brought James Shields to the White Sox, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Johnson and Fernando Tatis, Jr. are the two minor leaguers heading to Chicago in the deal, and it's possible Johnson could find himself pitching in the Padres' rotation in relatively short order. The right-hander has started two games for the White Sox this year, allowing nine earned runs and 14 hits - including five home runs - across 11.2 innings. In eight Triple-A starts, he's compiled a healthy 2.94 ERA with a 35:17 K:BB.
