Marcus Semien's walk up song should have been Bob Seger's, "Like a Rock," because from 2015 to 2024, that is exactly what he was. He had an IL stint in 2017 but otherwise played in nearly every game possible for Oakland and Texas. That all came to a crashing end in 2025, as his worst statistical season on record finally came to a merciful end in August with a foot injury. Semien has played more games than any other active second baseman in baseball since 2015, and we know the position is not a forgiving one to older players. Semien enters his age-35 season in a new league and city after getting dealt to the Mets for Brandon Nimmo this offseason. He still has the foot speed, but the quality of his contact continues to decline, thus costing him one of those coveted higher spots in the lineup. He was a four-category contributor last season but nowhere near his previous levels. We only have to look to George Springer's 2025 renaissance to be reminded of how dangerous it can be to write off aging players so quickly. We are not recommending taking Semien for his previous volume or stature, but he's a likely everyday player with the upside to log the sixth 20/10 campaign of his career.

    Semien went 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. Facing one of his former clubs, Semien drove a cutter from minor leaguer Grant Rogers over the left-field fence in the first inning. It was the veteran second baseman's second homer of the spring, but Semien hasn't exactly been locked in at the plate in camp, batting .172 (5-for-29) in 11 games with a 1:9 BB:K. After posting a career-low .669 OPS for the Rangers in 2025, the Mets are hoping Semien can rebound in a new environment while providing his usual strong defense, but the 35-year-old hasn't produced a hard-hit rate above the 26th percentile since 2021. There simply may not be much juice left to squeeze out of his bat.

    The Rangers are trading Semien to the Mets in exchange for outfielder Brandon Nimmo, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Semien's numbers have been trending down in recent years, and his .669 OPS last season was the lowest mark of his career. However, the 35-year-old still provided a mix of moderate power and speed with 15 homers and 11 stolen bases, and he offers elite defense at second base, as he's coming off winning his second Gold Glove Award. Semien ended the campaign on the 60-day injured list due to a foot injury, but he's expected to have a normal offseason and to be ready for spring training. Nimmo has a full no-trade clause in his contract, but per Will Sammon of The Athletic, the outfielder has already approved the deal.

Semien last played in late August due to a fractured third metatarsal and a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot, but he has not encountered any setbacks in his recovery and will not have his offseason training interrupted.
