Josh Rutledge: Released by Giants
Rutledge was released by the Giants on Wednesday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Rutledge posted a woeful .188 OPS over 18 games with Triple-A Sacramento this season, so the Giants decided to let him pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Giants' Josh Rutledge: Comes up short in roster battle
Rutledge was informed Tuesday that he did not make the Giants' Opening Day roster, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Rutledge put together a strong spring performance -- slashing .324/.381/.486 in 37 at-bats -- but ultimately came up short in his battle with Kelby Tomlinson to secure a reserve utility infield role with the Giants. The 28-year-old will now have to begin the season with Triple-A Sacramento and await a potential in-season promotion to the majors.

Giants' Josh Rutledge: In mix for bench role
Rutledge is being considered for one of the Giants' final roster spots this spring, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Kelby Tomlinson has been expected to fill the Giants' backup middle infield role, but Rutledge's presence this late in camp suggests that a final decision has not been made yet. The 28-year-old slashed .224/.297/.262 in 118 plate appearances with the Red Sox last season, so he wouldn't gain much fantasy value even in the scenario where he makes the cut and has to fill in for an injured starter at some point this year.

Giants' Josh Rutledge: In Giants' lineup
Rutledge (hip) will man the keystone and bat sixth against the Dodgers on Saturday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Rutledge missed a majority of the 2017 campaign with various injuries, including a hip ailment that forced him to undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery in late August. He appears to be at full health this spring and will compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster as a utility man.

Giants' Josh Rutledge: Agrees to minor-league deal with Giants
Rutledge (hip) signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
Rutledge is coming off an injury-filled campaign that saw him appear in just 37 games for the Red Sox due to a hamstring injury, a concussion and season-ending hip surgery he underwent in August. He wasn't really effective when healthy, turning in an unremarkable .224/.297/.262 line. He's expected to be healthy by spring training, where he'll compete for a roster spot as the Giants' utility infielder.

Josh Rutledge: Hits open market
Rutledge (hip) was taken off the 60-day disabled list, and elected free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment by the Red Sox on Thursday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Rutledge underwent season-ending hip surgery in late-August after dealing with a concussion for the better part of June and July. The third baseman will look to sign on with a new club this winter following a 2017 season in which he played 37 major-league games, slashing .224/.297/.262 with nine RBI. Looking ahead, he should be fully healed by spring training, barring any setbacks.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Undergoes season-ending hip surgery
Rutledge underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left hip Wednesday and is expected to be ready for the 2018 season, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Since Rutledge did not spend 90 days on the active roster, the Rule 5 rules will still be attached to him until he gets to the 90-day mark on the active roster between 2017 and 2018. This means that if the Red Sox want to keep him in the system, he needs to be on the active roster for roughly 30 days in 2018 and cannot be optioned until after the 2018 season. Rutledge hit .224/.297/.262 in 107 big-league at-bats this season.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Moves to 60-day DL
Rutledge (hip) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Monday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox needed to open a spot on the 40-man roster for recent acquisition Addison Reed, and given that the infielder will be on the shelf a bit longer due to a newfound hip injury, he'll give up his roster spot for the club's new reliever. Rutledge has already missed more than a month of action, so this designation will allow him to return to the active roster by the end of August if he's ready.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Dealing with hip issue
Rutledge (concussion) was recalled from his rehab assignment Friday because of a hip injury, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.
Rutledge had been out on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket, but will be reevaluated following this setback, remaining on the 7-day concussion disabled list for the time being. It's been a rough month for the infielder, as he was initially placed on the 10-day disabled list due to left hip soreness in late June, but was then switched over to the concussion list just a day later. More news on the situation should be revealed in the near future, although there doesn't appear to be a clear-cut role for Rutledge on the big-league club at the present time.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Reinstated from disabled list Friday
Rutledge (concussion) was activated from the 7-day concussion disabled list prior to Friday's game against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Rutledge spent over a month on the disabled list while dealing with a head injury, but he's slowly worked back to full health after appearing in five rehab games with Triple-A Pawtucket. The 28-year-old looks a tad rusty, going just 1-for-16 at the plate during his time with Pawtucket, but should provide infield depth for the Red Sox upon his arrival.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Remains on rehab assignment Tuesday
Rutledge (concussion) is still rehabbing with Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday, Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times reports.
Most people close to the situation expected the infielder to return from the disabled list Monday, but the Red Sox instead opted to bring top prospect Rafael Devers up from the minors to try to get any production out of the third base spot. Rutledge is now just 1-for-16 in five rehab games with the PawSox, which isn't a stat line that would compel the Red Sox to bring him back too soon.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: To be activated Monday
Rutledge (concussion) will come off the DL prior to Monday's game in Seattle, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
He has been on the concussion DL since June 21, so this was a pretty serious head injury. However, Rutledge said earlier this week that his concussion symptoms are gone, so it is not surprising to hear he will soon be activated. The Red Sox will option a reliever as a corresponding move, so Rutledge will be left to compete with Deven Marrero and Brock Holt for at-bats at third base.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Says concussion is gone
Rutledge (concussion) played five innings at second base Friday while on his rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.
Rutledge began his rehab assignment Thursday and said he hasn't experienced any symptoms. "I would say it's pretty much gone," he said of the concussion. "They're definitely nothing to fool around with, so I'm just happy I've been feeling better and thankful to be back out there." He'll play another seven innings Saturday before going a full nine Sunday. Once he's ready, Rutledge could join the Red Sox as part of a platoon at third base.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Starts rehab assignment Thursday
Rutledge (concussion) begins his rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times reports.
Rutledge will DH during his first game back from a concussion that has caused him to miss nearly a month's worth of action. The infielder could spend the rest of the weekend rehabbing and shaking off the rust depending on how Boston decides to handle his return. Since he's been out, Tzu-Wei Lin and Deven Marrero have been filling in just fine at third base, and it's unclear how manager John Farrell will shuffle the lineup moving forward.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Could begin rehab assignment next week
Rutledge (concussion) is gearing up for a rehab assignment and could be ready to play in games by next week, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Rutledge has been out since June 24 with a concussion as well as left hip soreness. If the third baseman is able to embark on a rehab assignment early on in the week, there's a chance that he could return by next weekend for Boston's series against the Angels. In the meantime, Tzu-Wei Lin and Deven Marrero have combined to man the hot corner.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Scratched from Friday's lineup
Rutledge (hip) was a late scratch from the Red Sox lineup Friday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.
In his place, Dustin Pedroia was inserted into the lineup after returning from a sore back. Rutledge should be considered day-to-day for now, but Boston may choose to give the infielder a couple of days to get back to 100 percent. If that indeed is the case, look for Deven Marrero to take over at third again Saturday.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Placed on 10-day DL
Rutledge (hip) was moved to the 10-day disabled list Saturday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.
Rutledge was scratched from Friday's lineup due to the hip injury, and it appears it's serious enough to warrant a trip to the disabled list. The Red Sox recalled Tzu-Wei Lin on Saturday to replace him on the 25-man roster.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Lands on concussion DL
Rutledge was placed on the 7-day concussion DL on Saturday, MassLive.com reports.
Left hip soreness was cited as the reason for Rutledge's scratch Friday, and apparently he's also dealing with concussion symptoms. It's uncertain if he will need more than seven days. Tzu-Wei Lin was brought up Saturday to bolster the team's infield depth.

Red Sox's Josh Rutledge: Sits for second consecutive day
Rutledge is not in the lineup Thursday against the Phillies, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.
Rutledge will cede the second straight start to Pablo Sandoval at third base. Rutledge is a superior defender at third base, although the Red Sox may be willing to give Sandoval an extended look at the hot corner just to see if they have anything left to squeeze out of their big-dollar investment.
