A.J. Griffin: Cut loose by Mets
Griffin was released by the Mets on Wednesday, Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Griffin allowed 16 runs on 13 hits and six walks across three innings in his first two starts with Triple-A Las Vegas this season, so the Mets decided to cut the 30-year-old loose. He's made 41 big-league appearances (38 starts) over the previous two seasons, albeit to little success (5.41 ERA across 196.1 innings). He should be able to find a minor-league deal elsewhere.

Mets' A.J. Griffin: Temporarily inactive with Triple-A
Griffin was placed on the temporarily inactive list, Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Review Journal reports.
No word has come forth as to why Griffin was moved to this list, but it may turn out to be nothing. The minor-league inactive lists are typically very flexible, so he could be out for a pretty short period of time.

Mets' A.J. Griffin: Sent to minors camp
The Mets reassigned Griffin to their minor-league camp Tuesday.
New York may not have Jason Vargas (hand) available for the start of the season, but with Zack Wheeler ready to step in and experienced starters in Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman and Rafael Montero also on hand, Griffin doesn't have a clear path to the big-league rotation. If the Mets' pitching staff retains relatively sound health over the first couple months of the season, Griffin could request a release from his minor-league contract in order to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Mets' A.J. Griffin: Signs minor-league deal with Mets
Griffin signed a minor-league contract with the Mets which includes an invitation to spring training, Matt Ehalt of The Bergen Record reports.
The 30-year-old righty put up an ugly 5.94 ERA in 77.1 innings with the Rangers last season. The underlying numbers say he deserved that high mark, as he posted a 6.26 FIP and a 28.5 percent groundball rate, a number which would have ranked lowest among all qualified starters. He's unlikely to be much of a factor in New York this season unless injuries deplete the team's rotation depth.

A.J. Griffin: Non-tendered by Rangers
The Rangers declined to tender Griffin a contract for 2018.
Griffin got off to a great start last season, posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over his first six starts, but he missed a large chunk of time with an oblique injury and mostly struggled upon his return in August (6.10 ERA, 1.41 ERA over his final 38.1 innings). Home runs were the big problem, with Griffin serving up a whopping 20 long balls in just 77.1 innings (12 on the road). He figures to have to settle for a minor-league deal in free agency.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Rocked in relief Tuesday
Griffin retired one batter and was charged with five runs on five hits and a hit-by-pitch in Tuesday's 14-3 loss to the Astros.
Griffin was making his third appearance in relief since being pulled from the rotation in favor of Nick Martinez following his Sept. 10 start. He's given up a total of seven runs in 5.1 innings during those appearances, giving manager Jeff Banister little reason to question his decision to drop Griffin from the rotation. Griffin is set to become a free agent during the offseason and could have to settle for a one-year deal or even a minor-league contract after compiling a 5.94 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 77.1 frames in 2017.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Ousted from rotation
Griffin won't make his normally scheduled start Friday against the Angels and will instead move to the bullpen, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Earlier this week, Rangers manager Jeff Banister gave no assurances that Griffin would take the hill Friday after the right-hander submitted another poor outing in his previous turn Sunday against the Yankees, leaving him with a 6.88 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over his last four stars. Sure enough, Banister elected to make a change, calling upon Nick Martinez to join the Rangers as the fifth member of the rotation. Griffin will presumably settle into the long-relief role that Martinez had filled out of the bullpen, which will just about eliminate any fantasy value he might have held in AL-only or deeper mixed leagues.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Shelled by Yankees in short outing
Griffin (6-6) took the loss Sunday against the Yankees after allowing five runs on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts in three-plus innings.
Griffin failed to get an out in the fourth inning before being chased in what ultimately turned into a six-run frame for the visitors. The right-hander has only managed to pitch more than six innings in one of 15 starts thanks to a combination of control problems and a tendency to get burned by the long ball. He'll look to lower his 3.38 BB/9 and 2.25 HR/9 in Friday's road tilt against the Angels.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Draws Sunday start
Griffin will start Sunday's game against the Yankees, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
It will be Griffin's first start since Sept. 2, as he was held out of action for more than a week with manager Jeff Banister opting to reshuffle the rotation following off days Tuesday and Thursday. Griffin has a strong track record against the Yankees during his career -- he's produced a 3-0 record and 2.37 ERA in five starts -- but with none of those outings coming in 2017, it's hard to put much faith in him as a streaming option or DFS selection.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Allows two runs in no-decision
Griffin gave up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Saturday.
Griffin left the game in line for the win, but the bullpen faltered and the Angels ended up winning in 10 innings. He has failed to pitch deep into games since his return from an oblique injury last month, as Griffin's routinely run his pitch count up with free passes (14 walks in his last 30 innings). The right-hander will make for a risky play next week with a home matchup against the Yankees on tap.

Griffin (6-5) allowed three earned runs on five hits in just 3.1 innings of an 8-3 loss to the Athletics on Sunday. He walked three and stuck out three.
Griffin has been lackluster lately, lasting no more than five innings in each of his last four starts while recording a 13:11 K:BB during that span. He hasn't done much to move the fantasy needle this year (5.26 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 52 strikeouts through 66.2 innings), making him pretty much irrelevant in all but the deepest of formats.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Undone by three-run fourth inning in loss
Griffin (6-4) allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five innings while taking Sunday's loss to the White Sox.
All of Chicago's offense came in the fourth inning, as Griffin allowed five of the first six hitters to reach with a walk, an infield single and a hit batter contributing to the carnage. That one poor inning was all it took to stick the right-hander with a loss, as Texas' normally explosive home offense was kept off the board until the ninth inning. Griffin's still fortunate to have this record given his 5.10 ERA in 12 starts, so the lack of run support was due to come at some point. He'll hope for better luck Friday in Oakland.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Ekes out win Tuesday
Griffin (6-3) picked up the win over the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing only one run on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out four.
The Rangers gave him plenty of run support, but Griffin needed 93 pitches (59 strikes) just to get through the minimum number of innings necessary to qualify for the win. Since his complete-game shutout of the Padres in early May, the righty has lasted more than five innings just once in six appearances, making him tough to rely on heading into Sunday's home start against the White Sox.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Can't keep ball in park Tuesday
Griffin (5-3) allowed four runs on four hits -- including three home runs -- and three walks over five innings in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Mets. He struck out three.
All the damage came in the first two innings, after which Griffin settled down and gave the Rangers a chance to mount what proved to be a futile comeback. It's the third time in 10 starts this season that the right-hander has surrendered three or more homers, leaving him with a 5.40 ERA and ghastly 2.7 HR/9. He'll be a very risky fantasy play in his next outing Sunday at home against the explosive Astros.

Griffin is now slated to start Tuesday's game against the Mets, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
With Andrew Cashner unable to start due to a sore neck, Griffin will slide up a day to fill in for him, leaving Wednesday's starter to be announced.

Griffin (5-2) allowed one run on two hits and a walk over six innings during Thursday's win over the Twins. He struck out four.
Griffin looked quite comfortable in his first start off the 60-day DL after missing the past two months with an oblique strain. The 29-year-old faced the minimum in five of his six innings and surrendered his only run on an RBI double by Byron Buxton in the bottom of the third inning. He likely could've pitched deeper into the game but manager Jeff Banister opted to play it safe and removed Griffin from the contest after just 81 pitches. He'll look to build on his success during his upcoming scheduled start against the Mets next Wednesday.

Rangers' A.J. Griffin: Activated ahead of Thursday's start
Griffin (oblique) was activated from the disabled list and will start Thursday's game against the Twins.
As expected, Griffin will rejoin the Rangers' rotation to make his first start since May 26. The 29-year-old, who was on the 60-day disabled list with an oblique strain, owned a 5.77 ERA and 1.28 WHIP through 39 innings (eight starts) before landing on the shelf.

Griffin (oblique) will start Thursday's game against the Mariners.
The Rangers chose to go with Griffin for the start over Austin Bibens-Dirkx, who had previously moved into the rotation last week in place of the injured Tyson Ross (finger). Ross looks to be on track to return from the 10-day disabled list next week, but there should be room in the rotation for both him and Griffin, as the recent trade of Yu Darvish to the Dodgers creates a permanent void. Griffin shouldn't face any limitations with his pitch count in his first outing with the Rangers since May 26 after turning in a successful four-game rehab stint, during which he delivered a 2.77 ERA and 15:3 K:BB over 13 innings.

Griffin (oblique) could be activated from the 60-day disabled list to start Thursday against the Twins, Sam Butler of MLB.com reports.
Griffin, who recently wrapped up a four-start rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock, was a potential option to start Tuesday following the trade of Yu Darvish to the Dodgers, but the Rangers ended up calling up Nick Martinez from Triple-A to temporarily fill the void in the rotation. Another opening exists Thursday with Tyson Ross (finger) not quite ready to return from the 10-day DL, so Griffin and long reliever Austin Bibens-Dirkx are both being considered as replacement options. If manager Jeff Banister decides to go with Bibens-Dirkx on Thursday, Griffin might not be activated from the DL until next week. In the latter scenario, Griffin would likely replace Martinez, who is a good bet to return to the minors after he was torched for seven runs in 5.1 innings Tuesday in a loss to the Mariners.
