The 28-year-old owns a solid 2.31 ERA and 12:1 K:BB through 11.2 innings with Triple-A Iowa this season, but his ugly numbers at the major-league level (32 earned runs across 16.2 innings) will likely limit him to low-leverage work during his time with Chicago. Mazzoni was competing for a bullpen spot with the Padres, but after allowing a .357 BAA and giving up four runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings pitched, he'll head back to Triple-A to develop a bit more. There is a good chance that he could reappear with the Padres at some point this season if he can improve against upper-level hitters, though, as he did reach the majors for a brief time last season.
