Jason Rogers: Released by Pirates
Rogers was released by the Pirates on Friday.
Rogers requested the release so he could sign with a professional team in Japan, but leaves after two relatively productive seasons with Triple-A Indianapolis. Despite his .289 batting average and nine home runs this season, the 29-year-old was mainly bound to serve as organizational depth behind rising first baseman Josh Bell, catalyzing his request for a release. Rogers went 2-for-25 with nine strikeouts for the Pirates last year, his last appearance in the majors.

Rogers is 1-for-4 across three spring games since returning from an ankle injury.
It appears Rogers is feeling better, as the 29-year-old has now played in three straight games after missing the majority of March with an ankle injury. He's expected to start the year at Triple-A Indianapolis, and given Pittsburgh's depth ahead of him at first base, it will be difficult for Rogers to earn big league playing time this season.

Good news on the rehab front regarding Rogers, who is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Indianapolis. The first baseman will face an uphill challenge to see major league playing time this season, as the Pirates boast solid depth at the position.

Pirates' Jason Rogers: In walking boot
Rogers has right ankle discomfort after injuring his foot before Wednesday's game, BIll Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. He is currently in a walking boot and will be re-evaluated in a week.
The Triple-A Indianapolis asset is around camp as depth, but is trying to prove he should at least be on the shuttle to the majors this year. Rogers will probably miss at least a few days in his quest to do so.

Rogers was designated for assignment Friday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
The Pirates will give Rogers' spot on the 40-man roster to Nefi Ogando, who was claimed off waivers Friday. Rogers struggled in his brief stint with the Pirates in 2016, collecting just two hits with nine strikeouts in 25 at-bats. He'll now be subject to waivers and could land with a team looking to add organizational depth at either corner infield spot.

Rogers was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
Rogers has predominantly seen time at third base at Triple-A this season, but he has also started games at first base and left field. That defensive versatility, if it even qualifies as such given the fact he doesn't play any up-the-middle positions, is about all he can hang his hat on. Rogers is slashing .263/.338/.371 with six homers in 420 plate appearances at Triple-A this year. He has a solid approach and makes good contact (18.6 percent K-rate), but he is pretty uninteresting in fantasy.

Rogers was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Bill Brink reports.
He has a .286/.346/.429 slash line with four home runs in 45 games for Indianapolis and has been particularly devastating against lefties (.339/.414/.484). To that end, he will likely get some starts at first base against southpaws along with some pinch-hit opportunities when a lefty is pitching, limiting his value to daily leagues.

Rogers was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Rogers was first called up on April 22, but he's been a putrid 1-for-13 with six strikeouts since then, so he'll head back to the minors for more regular playing time. The move hasn't been officially announced yet, so there is currently no corresponding move, but there is some speculation that Rogers' demotion could mean that Jung Ho Kang (knee) is close to returning to the Pirates.

Rogers is still in the running for the team's final bench spot, along with Pedro Florimon and Cole Figueroa, Adam Berry of the team's official website reports.
Rogers seemed to grow more comfortable throughout spring training and even saw a decent amount of playing time at first base late in camp. He's a career .290 hitter with an .838 OPS in the minor leagues. Since Sean Rodriguez is the only other backup middle infielder on the roster, it's likely the team goes with Florimon or Figueroa over Rogers, but Rogers could prove to be a sneaky midseason pickup in fantasy leagues.
