  • Pat Light: Hangs it up

Light announced his retirement Monday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Light hadn't recorded a big-league statistic since the 2016 season, when he appeared in 17 contests between stops in Boston and Minnesota. He struggled to an 11.34 ERA and 2.28 WHIP with 16 punchouts over 16.2 frames over that stretch. Light spent time in the Mariners' farm system in 2017 and 2018 prior to being released.

  • Pat Light: Released by Mariners

Light was released by the Mariners on Tuesday, Tacoma Rainiers broadaster Mike Curto reports.

Light was claimed off waivers by the Mariners last June but never sniffed the big leagues. The 27-year-old allowed eight runs with eight walks and no strikeouts over three innings for Triple-A Tacoma this season, and will hope to latch on with another organization.

  • Mariners' Pat Light: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Mariners outrighted Light to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

The transaction opens up a 40-man roster spot for the Mariners, though the team has yet to announce a corresponding move. Light, 26, was plucked off waivers from the Pirates on July 17 and was lit up for four runs in one inning during his lone appearance with the Rainiers.

  • Mariners' Pat Light: Heading to Mariners

Light was claimed off waivers by the Mariners on Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Light was designated for assignment by the Pirates on June 10, but his passable 3.76 ERA with Pittsburgh's Triple-A affiliate caught the Mariners' eye. He has a live arm, routinely sitting in the mid 90s with his fastball, although he hasn't been able to translate any of his minor-league success to the big leagues. To make room for him on the active roster, Ryne Harper was designated for assignment.

  • Pirates' Pat Light: Designated for assignment

Light was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Saturday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

Light was designated in order to make room on the roster for recently selected Edgar Santana. The 27-year-old had not appeared in any games with the Pirates this season, posting a 4.13 ERA at the Triple-A level with Indianapolis. During the 2016 season, Light earned 17 appearances with the Red Sox and Twins, but allowed 21 earned runs in 16.2 innings with a 16:16 K:BB, making it a toss-up whether teams will claim him off waivers.

  • Pirates' Pat Light: Optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis

Light was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.

The hard-throwing right-hander could eventually work his way into the Pirates' bullpen mix, but he'll have to bide his time at the Triple-A level until he can iron out his control problems. Over 54.2 combined innings in the majors and at Triple-A last season, Light walked a whopping 35 batters.

  • Pirates' Pat Light: Traded to Pirates

Light was traded to the Pirates on Thursday for a player to be named or cash considerations

Light had recently been designated for assignment by the Twins to make room for infielder Ehire Adrianza. The 25-year-old right-hander posted successful minor league stints with both Boston and Minnesota last season, but enjoyed far less success at the big league level. In 17 appearances shared between the Twins and the Red Sox, Light turned in a 11.34 ERA along with a disappointing 8.6 BB/9 over 16.2 innings. The Pirates will be hoping they can help him regain the effectiveness he demonstrated in Triple-A, which could eventually provide a valuable boost to their big league bullpen.

  • Twins' Pat Light: Designated for assignment

Light was designated for assignment Monday.

After acquiring him in a trade with the Red Sox last year, the Twins designated Light for assignment in order to make room on the roster for recently claimed infielder Ehire Adrianza. The 25-year-old struggled in his limited big league appearances last year, posting a 11.34 ERA across 14 innings between Boston and Minnesota. He fared much better in Triple-A, however, accumulating a 2.37 ERA with a 9.9 K/9 in 38 innings there. His solid numbers at Triple-A should garner him some interest on waivers for those in need of bullpen depth.

  • Twins' Pat Light: Promoted by Twins

Light was recalled by the Twins on Sunday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Light was acquired from Boston in a deadline deal, and the lefty will now get his first taste of Major League action with his new club. Between Triple-A Pawtucket and Triple-A Rochester, Light is a perfect 9-for-9 on save opportunities, posting a combined 2.37 ERA. The 25-year-old will be a strong boost to the back end of a Minnesota bullpen that has struggled this year.

  • Twins' Pat Light: Traded to Twins

Light was traded to the Twins in exchange for Fernando Abad on Monday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The Red Sox were determined to add a lefty reliever to their bullpen at the trade deadline and found their man in Abad, whom the non-contending Twins were eager to deal while he still maintains some value. The 25-year-old Light isn't a marquee prospect, but he offers more years of club control and has been impressive while working as the closer for Triple-A Pawtucket this season, producing a 2.32 ERA and 36 strikeouts over 31 innings. He'll likely report to Triple-A Rochester with his new organization, but he could join the Twins at some point down the stretch.

  • Red Sox's Pat Light: Gets beaten up by Angels on Saturday

Light allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits, including two homers, over 1.2 innings in Saturday night's 21-2 loss to the Angels. After the game, he was demoted to Triple-A Pawtucket, Brandon Chase of Mass Live reports.

Light had been pitching well in high-leverage situations at Triple-A Pawtucket, so there was a sense of anticipation after his call-up earlier this week. Could he evolve into a viable setup arm to take pressure of Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa? But Light got thrown in front of a speeding bus Saturday -- the Angels led 15-1 when he entered the game. No matter how many hits and runs he gave up, Light was going to give Boston as many outs as possible.

  • Red Sox's Pat Light: Recalled from Pawtucket

Light was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

Light will take the roster spot formerly held by Eduardo Rodriguez, who was optioned to the minors after giving up nine runs in Monday's start. Although the Red Sox lack an obvious solution in the rotation, Light could help stabilize a struggling bullpen, as he hasn't allowed a run for Pawtucket since May 17, recording 13 strikeouts and four saves over 12 innings since that date.

  • Red Sox's Pat Light: Nine consecutive scoreless outings

Light tossed a shutout inning while striking out two for Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.

That's nine consecutive scoreless appearances for Light, who has struck out 10 and walked three in 10 innings during the run. The more we see Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa struggle for Boston, the more we believe Light will be summoned to help shore up the bridge to closer Craig Kimbrel.

  • Red Sox's Pat Light: Picks up save or Triple-A Pawtucket

Light pitched a scoreless ninth inning Monday to earn his fourth save of the season for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Light is setting into the closer's role at Pawtucket and hasn't allowed a run in his last five appearances. If he can continue to limit the walks, there might be a place for him in Boston's bullpen. The Red Sox have lost Carson Smith (elbow) for the season and are getting some shaky performances from Koji Uehara recently.

  • Red Sox's Pat Light: Pitches two innings Thursday

Light (hand) pitched two scoreless innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. He walked one and allowed two hits.

This was Light's first appearance since he experienced some swelling in his hand after getting hit by batted ball this past weekend.

  • Red Sox's Pat Light: Able to play catch Sunday

Light has swelling in his right hand, but was able to play catch Sunday, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.

Light was struck by a batted ball Saturday on his pitching hand. The fact that he was able to play catch means he could be available within the week if the pain and swelling subside enough.

Light was one out away from closing out the game and was forced to leave. He'll be evaluated Sunday.

  • Red Sox's Pat Light: Will head back to Triple-A

Light will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket in order for Marco Hernandez to rejoin the Red Sox, Sean McAdam of CSN New England reports.

Light made just one MLB outing during his short stint with the Red Sox. In fact, it was his MLB debut which went over poorly after giving up two earned runs in one inning of work. Despite the poor debut, the 25-year-old is on the short list for a future call-up later in the summer when Boston is in need of bullpen depth.
