The 25-year-old lefty has a 6.32 ERA in 15.2 career major-league innings. He had recorded a 4.26 ERA with nearly as many walks (12) as strikeouts (13) in 19 innings for Triple-A Norfolk this season.

Orioles' Jayson Aquino: Receives invitation to spring training
Aquino will attend the Orioles' big-league camp as a non-roster invitee, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports.
Aquino appeared in four games for Baltimore in 2017, two of which were starts. He struggled during that brief sample and allowed 11 runs on 15 hits and six walks over 13.1 innings. The 25-year-old southpaw could compete for a spot in the bullpen, but may need to show some improvement at Triple-A Norfolk before earning another shot with the big club.

Orioles' Jayson Aquino: Back in Baltimore
Aquino agreed to a minor-league deal with the Orioles on Friday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
Aquino made four appearances with Baltimore in 2017, posting a 7.43 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 13.1 innings. During 21 starts with Triple-A Norfolk -- where he'll likely begin next season -- the southpaw sported an 89:41 K:BB and held a 4.24 ERA. The 25-year-old has struggled during his brief opportunities in the big leagues, but it appears as though the Orioles haven't yet given up on the posibility that he can find success at the next level.

As has been the case numerous times this season, Aquino will head back to the minors now that his arm is unavailable for the coming days. He's made a number of spot starts for Baltimore this season, although with Chris Tillman (personal) nearing a return to the rotation, there may be limited opportunities for his services in the rotation for the foreseeable future. Infielder Johnny Giavotella will fill his roster spot.

Aquino was called up by the Orioles on Wednesday and will make his second start of the season against the Brewers.
Aquino is taking the place of Chris Tillman, who was placed on paternity leave prior to Wednesday's contest. During three appearances with Baltimore this season, Aquino has given up eight earned runs off 10 hits and six walks in just eight innings. He will have his hands full against a hot Milwaukee offense in his second career start at the big-league level.

Aquino hadn't missed many bats in his prior MLB appearances this season, so those whiffs are a surprise. He's been a high-WHIP pitcher in the upper minors, and that doesn't offer a lot of hope for Aquino, who was only up for a spot start and will likely be sent down promptly.

Aquino will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Aquino will step in to start for Chris Tillman, who is expected to be on placed on the paternity list prior to the contest. The 24-year-old held his own in a spot start earlier in the season for the Orioles -- allowing two runs over 6.1 innings -- but he struggled in a pair of relief appearances afterwards, which ultimately resulted in him returning to the minors. He owns a 4.46 ERA and 55:24 K:BB through 12 starts (66.2 innings) at Triple-A this season.

Aquino did not make any appearances during his most recent call-up and has not made any major-league outings since April 28. Aquino (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two batters over six innings during Saturday's win over Boston.
Holding the Red Sox to two runs is impressive, but this was also just Aquino's third start above Double-A, so keeping expectations in check is advised. He's likely earned another start and lines up to face the Yankees next week, which will be another tough matchup.

The 24-year-old allowed five runs (four earned) while striking out 11 in nine innings (two starts) at Triple-A Norfolk before being recalled. It's uncertain if he'll return to the bullpen or continue to serve as the Orioles' fifth starter while Chris Tillman (shoulder) is sidelined, but that should become clearer in the near future.

Aquino remains an option to start Saturday against the Red Sox, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports.
He was recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday to offer an extra arm out of the bullpen, but has not yet been used. The Orioles announced that Dylan Bundy will start on normal rest Friday, so it will either be Aquino or Alec Asher on the hill Saturday against Steven Wright. If either Aquino or Asher is used out of the bullpen Thursday or Friday, that should cement who will start Saturday. Neither is an intriguing fantasy option, but Asher would be slightly more interesting, as he has already logged a quality start in his lone outing in the big leagues this season.

He was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, presumably to serve as a long reliever on either Wednesday or Thursday, but if Alec Asher is used in that role instead, Aquino would presumably get a spot start either Friday or Saturday. He was scheduled to start Thursday at Triple-A, so he would be on extra rest. Aquino had a 4.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 11 strikeouts in nine innings (two starts) prior to his call-up.

However, the Orioles need another starter for their upcoming series against Toronto and are considering Aquino as well as Alec Asher, another pitcher with the Norfolk team.

Orioles' Jayson Aquino: Sent to Triple-A
Aquino was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday.
Aquino posted an impressive 1.20 ERA over 15 innings this spring, leading some to speculate that he would be a candidate to replace Chris Tillman (shoulder) in the rotation. It now appears this won't happen out of the gates, but Baltimore does open the year with two games and two off days in the first four days, so it's possible Aquino is called up when that starter is needed. The Orioles could also elect to use veteran Ubaldo Jimenez in that role, but the decision likely depends on whether Wade Miley (illness) is ready to make a start by April 9. Regardless of the team's decision, the 24-year-old Aquino is worth keeping an eye on as a potential spot-start candidate later in the year.
