Stankiewicz signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Saturday. Stankiewicz was assigned to Triple-A Louisville. • Red Sox's Teddy Stankiewicz: No. 1 starter in Portland

Stankiewicz will start Opening Day for Double-A Portland, Kevin Thomas of the Portland Press reports. Stankiewicz is an inning-munching starter without a lot of upside, but throws strikes. In a spring where Boston's starting depth came to the forefront, the right-handed Texan could be an emergency spot starter for Boston.

  • Red Sox's Teddy Stankiewicz: Goes back to original arm slot

Stankiewicz switched back to a traditional arm slot for 2016 after an experiment with a lower slot in 2015 had a deleterious effect on his performance, the Boston Globe reports. The lower arm slot improved Stankiewicz's fastball velocity, but flatted out other pitches. The end result: in 25 starts, he went 5-11 with a 4.01 ERA and just 4.9 strikeouts per inning. Now, with the traditional arm slot, Stankiewicz has created better angle on all of his pitches, particularly the slider that is generating swings-and-misses as it dives below bats. In four starts (all no-decisions), he has a 1.12 ERA with 6.8 strikeouts and 1.5 walks per nine innings.
