  • A.J. Achter: Wraps up playing career

Achter was named pitching coach for the Eastern Michigan University baseball program Monday, effectively ending his playing career.

Achter will become just the second active coach in the Mid-American Conference with MLB playing experience after 45 appearances across three seasons with the Twins and Angels. The 29-year-old spent all of the 2017 campaign in the minors, logging 28.2 innings for Double-A Erie in the Tigers organization before moving on to the independent Atlantic League.

  • A.J. Achter: Gets released by Detroit

Achter was released by the Tigers on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

It was apparently a mutual parting for the two sides, as Achter didn't perform well enough with Double-A Erie to convince the Tigers to keep him around and the right-hander likely desired joining an organization that presented an easier path to the big leagues. The 28-year-old, who compiled a 3.11 ERA over 27 appearances with the Angels last season, will look to land a minor-league deal elsewhere.

  • Tigers' A.J. Achter: Assigned to minor-league camp

Achter was assigned to the Tigers' minor-league camp Monday.

Achter inked a minor-league contract with the Tigers in December that included an invitation to major-league camp in spring training, but his standing as a non-roster pitcher put him in an uphill battle to win a bullpen gig with the big club. The 27-year-old was able to put up a 3.11 ERA in 37.2 innings with the Angels last season, but an ugly 14:12 K:BB ratio and 93.1 percent strand rate suggests he benefited from some good fortune.

  • Tigers' A.J. Achter: Agrees to NRI deal with Tigers

Achter signed a minor league contract with the Tigers on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

Achter appeared in the major leagues each of the past three seasons, most recently posting a respectable 3.11 ERA 37.2 innings out of the Angels bullpen. That being said, he doesn't miss too many bats (as his 4.8 career K/9 suggests) and struggles with the longball (1.9 career HR/9), so his ceiling likely sits at that of a low-leverage middle reliever.

  • A.J. Achter: Elects free agency

Achter elected free agency instead of accepting an assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Achter may catch on as depth somewhere else. However, his 3.11 ERA as an Angel looks like a fluke when you consider he only struck out 14 in 37.2 innings.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Outrighted to minors

Achter was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.

Achter was designated for assignment last week and after passing through waivers unclaimed, he'll report to the Triple-A affiliate. The 28-year-old was actually fairly effective in the majors this season, working to a 3.11 ERA -- though his FIP was 5.91 and he had a dreadful 1.2 K/BB. He'll serve as organizational depth and could find his way back in the big league bullpen at some point next season.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Designated for assignment

Achter was designated for assignment Wednesday.

The Angels made some bullpen upgrades, claiming Blake Parker and Kirby Yates from the Yankees, so Achter lost his spot on the 40-man roster. Achter posted a 3.11 ERA last year, but his hideous 14:12 K:BB in 37.2 innings exposed him as someone who should struggle to hold a steady big league bullpen job going forward.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Called up by Angels

Achter was recalled by the Angels on Monday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Achter will get the call on the verge of the end of Salt Lake City's minor league season. The right-hander, who has been with the club before, will likely serve in middle relief.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Optioned to minors Monday

Achter was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.

Achter's latest stint with the Major League club lasted just over a week, as he pitched four innings and allowed one run over two appearances in that span. He could still come back up once the rosters are expanded, but in the meantime, he'll head back to the minors to clear a roster spot for an additional position player, as Rafael Ortega was promoted in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Recalled from Triple-A

Achter was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake City on Sunday.

The Angels decided they could use a bit of bullpen depth for Sunday's series finale, so they recalled the right-handed Achter for another stint in the majors. He's been back and forth from the minors all season long, and is likely one of the first names on the chopping block if the need for another roster spot arises.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake

Achter was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.

Achter was called up to the team Tuesday and pitched one scoreless inning for the Angels that day. He will go back down to Salt Lake, where he has compiled a 4.12 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP over 39.1 innings of work this season.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Promoted from Triple-A

Achter was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.

With Cam Bedrosian being placed on the 15-day DL Tuesday with a finger injury, Achter was called up to replace him on the active roster. Achter has spent the majority of 2016 with the Angels' Triple-A affiliate, compiling a 4.12 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 39.1 relief innings.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Assigned to Triple-A

Achter cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.

Achter was designated for assignment by the Angels on Monday after claiming Sean Coyle, but after clearing waivers, he will remain with the organization for Salt Lake at the Triple-A level. The right-hander went through this same exact process earlier in May, but may not get another chance with the big league team this season barring any significant injuries.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Designated for assignment

Achter was designated for assignment by the Angels on Monday.

The Angels were in need of a 40-man roster spot after claiming Sean Coyle off of waivers, and the 27-year-old reliever with a 4.70 ERA at Triple-A Salt Lake appears the odd man out. He could wind up on another team's 40-man roster, but more likely will pass through waivers and remain in the Angels' organization.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Designated for assignment

Achter has been optioned to Triple-A by the Angels, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.

The 27-year-old Achter posted a mediocre 3.98 ERA in 20.1 innings of relief for the Angels. He was decent in a swingman role, but arms like his -- an average fastball of 91.0 mph, five home runs allowed in 13 appearances -- are a dime a dozen in the Triple-A ranks. The Angels needed room on their 25-man roster for recent waiver claim J.C. Ramirez, so Achter will return to Triple-A Salt Lake for the foreseeable future.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Moves up from Triple-A Salt Lake

Achter was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, Pedro Moura of the LA Times reports.

With Cory Rasmus (groin) moving to the 15-day disabled list, Achter will return to the show with hopes of improving after a rough stint earlier this season, during which he allowed six runs in 11.1 innings (seven games). His performance at Salt Lake hasn't been much better, as his ERA and WHIP are 4.76 and 1.45, respectively.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Assigned to Triple-A

Achter cleared waivers Tuesday and was assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Achter was designated for assignment on May 22 to clear a spot for Lucas Luetge, but after clearing waivers, he'll remain with the Angels organization at the Triple-A level. However, given that he no longer has a spot on the 40-man, his odds of rejoining the big league roster any time soon are relatively slim.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Designated for assignment

Achter was designated for assignment Sunday, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.

Achter was moved off the 40-man roster in order to make a spot available for relief pitcher Lucas Luetge.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Recalled from Triple-A

Achter was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

The 27-year-old will return for his third stint with the big club this season, replacing Cory Rasmus (groin) in the Angels' bullpen. Achter has totaled four appearances with Los Angeles to this point, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three over 7.1 innings. He could stick around until Rasmus returns, but Achter rarely misses bats and is unlikely to see high-leverage work.

  • Angels' A.J. Achter: Optioned to Triple-A on Thursday

Achter was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.

The Angels needed to make room for newly-acquired Jhoulys Chacin, and Achter ended up being the casualty. He pitched fairly well during his most recent stint with the big club, posting a 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 6.1 innings of work, although he only struck out a pair of batters in that time. He'll head back to the minors for now, although he could be right back up with the big club if he maintains the 2.45 ERA and 0.73 WHIP he holds with Salt Lake.
