Padres' Cesar Vargas: Cast off 40-man by Padres
Vargas was designated for assignment Friday.
He was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for recently-acquired pitching prospect Jake Esch. The 25-year-old Vargas pitched well this spring, posting a 2.70 ERA despite a lofty 2.40 WHIP in a pair of appearances in big league camp. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, as he managed to make the jump from Double-A to the majors last year, but it seems that Vargas will have to settle for being an organizational depth piece for the time being.

Padres' Cesar Vargas: Sent down to Triple-A
Vargas has been sent down to Triple-A El Paso on Monday, officially removing him from the competition for the starting rotation.
Vargas was already considered a dark horse in the race, so this move shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The 25-year-old will start the year with Triple-A El Paso and wait for an opportunity to open at the MLB level.

Vargas will have to make the roster as a starter, AJ Casavell of MLB.com reports.
Vargas returned from the Mexican Winter League ready to compete for a roster spot this spring. It appears as though the Padres are taking a "starter or bust" approach with the 25-year-old, ruling out the possibility of making the roster as a reliever. Even with the Padres' lack of talent in the starting pitching department, it would be hard to consider Vargas a favorite to win one of the remaining rotation spots. He showed some promise as a reliever as recently as 2015 in the Yankees' organization (2.79 ERA over 67.2 innings with Double-A Trenton), but San Diego seems dead set on making him a starter.

Padres' Cesar Vargas: Will pitch in Mexico this winter
Vargas (forearm) will pitch in the Mexican Winter League this offseason, the Padres' official site reports.
If all goes as planned for Vargas this offseason, it is expected that he'll be in a large competition for a rotation spot in San Diego during spring training, but the 25-year-old may be considered a long shot at this point to earn one of the five starting jobs for Opening Day.

Padres' Cesar Vargas: Has been transferred 60-day DL
Vargas (forearm) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Friday.
Vargas was originally placed on the 15-day DL on May 29 due to right elbow soreness that was revealed as a flexor strain. He has been shut down for the past month and will likely return in late July barring any setbacks. Prior to his injury, Vargas had posted a 5.03 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP in 34 innings of work during his rookie season.

Vargas' MRI on Wednesday revealed a flexor strain and he will be reevaluated in three weeks, Dennis Lin of the Union-Tribune reports.
Vargas landed on the disabled list Sunday due to some soreness in his pitching elbow, and the MRI when the team returned to San Diego revealed a flexor strain. The timetable at this point is for him to be shut down for three weeks before being reevaluated in late June. MLB.com's AJ Cassavell reports that the hope around the team is that Vargas can avoid undergoing surgery.

Vargas (elbow) will undergo an MRI when the team returns to San Diego on Wednesday, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union Tribune reports.
Vargas was examined by team doctors Sunday after his placement on the DL, but the results don't seem to have been conclusive. The MRI results should determine whether or not Vargas suffered any structural damage, but Padres fans will have to wait a few days for official word.

Vargas was moved to the 15-day disabled list Sunday due to right elbow soreness, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
While an official replacement hasn't been named, MLB.com's AJ Cassavell pegged Colin Rea as the likely candidate. Vargas lasted just 1.2 innings Saturday while allowing seven runs on six hits and two walks, suggesting something could be wrong. That appears to be the case, and he'll now turn his focus to getting healthy for a return from the disabled list, with June 13 serving as his first eligible day for activation.

Padres' Cesar Vargas: Suffers worst defeat of season Saturday night
Vargas (0-3) was blasted out of the game after just 1.2 innings in Saturday's loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing seven runs, six hits and two walks while striking out one.
Suffering the worst defeat of his major league career, Vargas' ERA ballooned from 3.34 to 5.03, and his WHIP was inflated to a season-high 1.65. He'll look to rebound when he takes the hill for his next start on Thursday against the Mariners.

Vargas allowed just two runs with seven strikeouts and one walk across seven strong innings Saturday versus the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision as the game went to extra innings.
Vargas delivered his strongest start of the season Saturday, setting season-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts, although his club wasn't able to secure him the win. He sports a solid 3.34 ERA through seven starts, but he'll need to continue limiting the baserunners going forward in order to trim down his 1.48 WHIP. Vargas allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out seven over five innings, but received no decision Sunday at the Brewers.
Vargas allowed a pair of solo homers, and although he left the game with a one-run deficit, the offense picked up the Padres, taking them off the hook for a potential loss. He's now held opponents to two or fewer runs in four of his five starts, and his ERA is at 3.55. He'll make his ensuing start next weekend against the Dodgers.

Padres' Cesar Vargas: Gives up six runs in loss to Cubs
Vargas gave up six runs in 10 hits and three walks over four innings in a loss to the Cubs on Tuesday. He struck out one batter.
The Padres' hitters were almost able to take Vargas off the hook for the loss against the Cubs' bullpen, but the early hole Vargas dug proved too much. As a result of the poor outing, Vargas' ERA more than tripled, going from 1.10 to 3.54. He'd gone at least five innings and allowed one run or fewer in each of his first three starts, so this outing isn't likely to affect his standing in the rotation, but prospective mixed-league owners need not look further than his 13:12 K:BB in 20.1 innings.

Despite earning the first quality start of his career, Vargas (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Rockies. He pitched six innings, allowing one run, four hits and three walks while striking out three.
The 24-year-old rookie from Mexico has been surprisingly effective since being called up from Double-A San Antonio on April 23. Sporting a beautiful 1.10 ERA, Vargas has earned the right to keep the fifth spot in the rotation, left vacant by Robbie Erlin (elbow), but his 1.35 WHIP suggests that ERA is not nearly sustainable. Potentially deserving of a spot in NL-only leagues for now, Vargas will get a tough test in his next start when he takes the hill Monday against the Cubs.

Vargas allowed no runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Friday.
Vargas left the game with a one-run lead, but the bullpen promptly gave up a run to take away his opportunity for a win. Although he's yet to pitch six innings in either of his two starts, he's only allowed a single run over 10.1 innings to give him a 0.87 ERA. However, he's been a bit lucky that he's held opponents down, as he owns a 1.45 WHIP. His next start will be Wednesday against the Rockies.

Vargas had an impressive major league debut against St. Louis on Saturday, allowing just one earned run in five efficient innings after being recalled from Double-A San Antonio. The right-hander shut down one of the best hitting lineups in baseball before Stephen Piscotty homered to lead off the sixth. With Robbie Erlin (elbow) on the mend, Vargas likely needs another solid outing to maintain his spot in the rotation, however.

Vargas was recalled from Double-A San Antonio on Saturday, MLB.com reports.
The Padres temporarily freed up a roster spot by placing Alexi Amarista (hamstring) on the DL, and they'll use it to add the right-hander, who will get the start Saturday night against the Cardinals. It will be Vargas' first action in the major leagues.
