Nate Orf: Stepping away from baseball
The Athletics announced Wednesday that Orf has elected to retire from professional baseball, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The 31-year-old was expected to contend for an Opening Day utility role with the Athletics, but his surprising decision to end his career will instead open up a spot on the 40-man roster. After going undrafted out of Baylor in 2013, Orf signed with the Brewers for just $500 and gradually worked his way through their minor-league system. He reached the majors for the first time in 2018 and made 21 career appearances between Milwaukee and Oakland, recording two hits -- including a home run -- in 28 at-bats.

Athletics' Nate Orf: Removed from lineup
Orf was removed from Monday's lineup for Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Mariners.
Orf was on track to make his first major-league start since 2018 during Monday's matinee, but he'll retreat to the bench instead. Tommy La Stella will shift to third base with Tony Kemp entering the lineup at second base. Orf's removal was likely due to Kemp's success against starter Marco Gonzales in the past, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

He takes the roster spot of Chad Pinder (strained hamstring). Orf is capable of playing multiple positions (second base, third base, shortstop, outfield), but he will likely play sparingly down the stretch.

Athletics' Nate Orf: Part of taxi squad
Orf was named to the Athletics' three-man taxi squad Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
The 30-year-old arrived in Oakland on a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training back in late November, and he showed well enough then and in summer camp to be designated part of the three-man squad that will accompany the team on road trips. Orf has experience playing second base, third base and shortstop -- along with all three outfield spots --from his days in the Brewers organization, making him a good fit for a unit designed to serve as emergency depth.

Orf is part of the Athletics' 60-man player pool that will report to the team's summer camp, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Orf posted a .272/.399/.410 slash and a career-high 11 home runs with Triple-A San Antonio in the Brewers organization last season, but he was nevertheless cut loose and subsequently signed to a minor-league contract by the Athletics in late November. The 30-year-old shapes up as nothing more than organizational depth, and he projects to be part of a pool of up to 30 players that will not be on the active roster but will continue to train off-site once the regular season begins.

Orf was outrighted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
The 28-year-old appeared in the first 15 games of his major-league career earlier in the season with the Brewers but managed just two hits in 21 at-bats. He'll vacate the 40-man roster to make room for new acquisition Xavier Cedeno, picked up via trade from the White Sox on Friday.

Orf is back just two days after his demotion as an injury replacement for Eric Thames (hamstring). He figures to ride the shuttle for the next six weeks or so, providing extra infield depth as needed before settling in for good in September.

Orf compiled a couple more plate appearances during his latest cup of coffee in the big leagues, though he failed to collect a hit across five at-bats. Orf played in four games for the Brewers during his first cup of coffee in the big leagues, during which he went 1-for-9 with a solo home run and one stolen base. Look for him to return to the fold later on this summer, especially if he continues to swing the bat well at the Triple-A level.

Brewers' Nate Orf: Hits first career homer
Orf went 1-for-3 with a homer in Wednesday's victory against the Twins.
The homer, a seventh-inning shot off Jose Berrios, was Orf's first major-league homer and first major-league hit. The 28-year-old rookie had a .309/.416/.468 line for Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to his callup and could be given a few opportunities to claim more playing time, especially at second base with starter Jonathan Villar having an unremarkable season at the plate.

Orf was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday.
Orf will provide extra depth in the middle of the Brewers' infield, especially at second base with Jonathan Villar currently atop the club's depth chart. Over 73 games with the Sky Sox this year, he slashed .309/.416/.468 with six home runs, 39 RBI and 20 stolen bases. In a corresponding move, Milwaukee optioned Aaron Wilkerson to the minors and shifted Nick Franklin to the 60-day DL (quadriceps).

Brewers' Nate Orf: Tearing it up at Triple-A level
Orf is 31-for-83 (.373) with 17 RBI, seven steals and an 11:15 BB:K through 24 games with Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.
Orf's batting average certainly catches the eye, but he has done the bulk of his damage in Colorado (1.112 OPS over 13 games) and has been rather pedestrian on the road (.724 OPS over 11 games). Orf is still hitting .294 with a .400 OBP on the road, though -- right around the .292 batting average and .388 OBP he owns for his career -- so getting on base is not much of an issue regardless of surroundings. These numbers would scream "call him up!" for a second baseman in his low 20s, but Orf turned 28 in February, so he has essentially advanced past the prospect stage of his career. The Brewers are getting very little from the second base position offensively, however, and the sizzling Orf has at least put himself in the conversation should the team decide to give another player or two a shot at the spot.
