Marlins' Chris O'Grady: Activated from DL and outrighted
O'Grady (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day DL and outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
O'Grady was removed from the 40-man roster in order to make room for some of the younger prospects in the club's system. The left-hander missed a majority of the 2018 season after suffering a left shoulder sprain in April.

O'Grady has been on the disabled list with a left shoulder sprain since mid-April, so the move doesn't significantly affect his recovery timetable. It's unclear where exactly the 28-year-old is at in the recovery process, and he will likely require a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment after sitting out the last two months.

Marlins' Chris O'Grady: Placed on disabled list
O'Grady was put on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Tuesday due to a left shoulder sprain, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
O'Grady will be eligible to return from the DL next Friday prior to the Marlins' series against Colorado. The southpaw appeared to have suffered the injury during his outing versus the Yankees on Tuesday, though the club has failed to describe a timetable for him at this point. In a corresponding move, Miami recalled Merandy Gonzalez from Double-A Jacksonville.

Marlins' Chris O'Grady: Likely ticketed for relief role
O'Grady is a frontrunner to earn a spot in the Marlins' bullpen, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
O'Grady was initially vying for one of the team's final rotation spots, but manager Don Mattingly noted the team would prefer to have the 27-year-old in a more versatile bullpen role. "I think we're looking at [O'Grady] more from a reliever standpoint, but as a reliever who can do multiple things," Mattingly said. With the Marlins' top lefty reliever from 2017, Jarlin Garcia, auditioning for a starting role, O'Grady could slide in as the team's top left-handed bullpen arm while also offering the flexibility to pitch multiple innings. O'Grady held lefty hitters to a .167 average last season, though he's not viewed strictly as a specialist.

O'Grady tossed a scoreless inning and was credited with his first hold of the season in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks.

O'Grady made an attempt to stay in the game, but he was unable to pitch through the pain. O'Grady coughed up six runs on seven hits and two walks over three innings but escaped with a no-decision in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Nationals. He struck out three.
The Nats ambushed O'Grady in the second inning, scoring all six of their runs, but when Max Scherzer removed himself from the game in the bottom of the second due to neck spasms, the door was open for the Marlins' hitters to rally and take their young lefty off the hook for a loss. This was just the fourth start of the season for O'Grady, and it was also his best by a wide margin. The 27-year-old lefty is down to a 3.68 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, and he's also now fanned 21 batters through 22 innings. In soft matchups, O'Grady could be worth a look, and he could continue to see his fantasy value rise in deep leagues with more solid outings. He lines up for a daunting matchup against the Nationals at Marlins Park in his next start.

There's no guarantee that O'Grady will stick in the rotation going forward, but he's still an arm to keep track of in deep settings.

O'Grady is slated to start Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers.
The Marlins appear to be shuffling the rotation a bit following the All-Star break, giving the rookie left-hander the chance to make his second major-league start against one of the highest-scoring teams in baseball. O'Grady will be looking to build upon the success he had in his debut against the Giants last week, when he allowed three earned runs over 5.1 innings to pick up the win. The left-hander put forth a useful performance, outdueling Jeff Samardzija, but for now, it probably had more to do with facing the weak Giants offense at pitcher-friendly AT&T Park. Still, O'Grady posted a 3.29 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 8.9 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 over 54.2 innings for Triple-A New Orleans this year. The Marlins staff could provide the 27-year-old with useful innings at times this year, but his role remains undetermined until Miami resets its rotation after the All-Star break.

O'Grady, a 10th-round pick in 2012, will make his first major-league start Saturday opposite Jeff Samardzija in San Francisco. This is the lefty's first year in the Marlins' organization after five seasons with the Angels and one spring with the Reds as a Rule 5 pick -- he was offered back to the Angels after failing to win a roster spot out of camp last year. He's posted a 3.29 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 54:15 K:BB in 54.2 innings with New Orleans this season.

Angels' Chris O'Grady: Returned to Angels
O'Grady, a Rule 5 pick by the Reds, has been returned to the Angels and assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake City, the Angels announced.
O'Grady had a chance to win a roster spot with the Reds but allowed 11 runs (10 earned) and served up three home runs in 9.2 innings of relief. O'Grady posted a 3.28 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A as a 25-year-old and will have a chance to earn a midseason call-up to the Angels.
