Dodgers' Layne Somsen: Outrighted by Dodgers on Sunday
Somsen was outrighted off the 40-man roster Sunday, MLB.com reports.
The Dodgers needed room to activate Brandon McCarthy (elbow) from the 60-day DL, and the recently-acquired Somsen was one of the roster casualties. Somsen likely didn't have much of a future with the Dodgers after getting designated for assignment Friday, but will need to pass through waivers unclaimed before being able to elect free agency.

Somsen was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Friday.
A waiver acquisition from the Yankees, Somsen ended up spending just a little over a week on the Dodgers' 40-man roster. He's bounced between three organizations already this year and may join a fourth if another team decides to take a flier on the 27-year-old right-hander. Otherwise, he may accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Somsen was claimed by the Dodgers on Wednesday, Jon Weisman of Dodger Insider reports.
Somsen had been designated for assignment by the Yankees on Monday and will now join the Dodgers' organization. The 27-year-old has only given up four earned runs in 25 innings at the Triple-A level but was shelled for five earned runs in just 2.1 innings of MLB action this season.

Somsen was designated for assignment Monday to make room for Ike Davis on the 40-man roster.
Since being claimed off waivers on May 24, Somsen has not allowed a run over six innings with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, so the move doesn't seem related to performance. The right-hander still has value as a low-level reliever and could be on the move again following the DFA.

Somsen was claimed off waivers by the Yankees on Tuesday.
Somsen was apparently DFA'd earlier in the day, likely to make room on the roster for Daniel Wright, who will come up to start Tuesday night against the Dodgers. Somsen, who likely would have wound up at Triple-A Louisville had he passed through waivers unclaimed, will initially head to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate. The 26-year-old made two appearances for the Reds, allowing six hits, five earned runs and three walks over 2.1 innings.

Reds' Layne Somsen: Optioned to Triple-A
Somsen was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday.
Somsen was tagged for five runs on five hits in just 1.1 innings Tuesday, and he'll now head back to Triple-A as the Reds bring up a pair of relievers in Jumbo Diaz and Keyvius Sampson. Utility man Jose Peraza was also optioned Wednesday to free up a roster spot.

Somsen has been recalled by the Reds, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
He'll replace outfielder Kyle Waldrop on the 25-man roster. Somsen did not pitch for the Reds in his previous stint with the big club earlier this season. In eight appearances spanning 14 innings at Triple-A Louisville, he's posted a 1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB. Given the current state of the Reds' bullpen, Somsen seemingly has a chance to stick if he proves capable of handling a low-leverage role.

Somsen was optioned to Triple-A Louisville Wednesday.
Somsen was originally brought up while Jay Bruce was placed on paternity leave. He will now head back to Triple-A now that Bruce has returned. Somsen could be called back up and slotted into the bullpen if injuries occur, but his upside is likely limited to being a middle reliever.

Jay Bruce was placed on the paternity list Monday, leaving an open spot on the Reds roster for a few days. Thanks to Somsen's strong 1.04 ERA and 11 strikeouts through 8.2 innings in the minors, he garnered a call to the big leagues despite not initially being on the 40-man roster. The right-hander will likely slot into a low-leverage bullpen role before heading back to Triple-A in a few days.
