Red Sox's Justin Haley: Dropped from 40-man roster
Haley was sent outright to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.
Haley will remain in Boston's organization after passing through waivers untouched. The move frees up roster space for prospects who need to be protected from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. Haley spent the majority of the 2018 season with Triple-A Pawtucket, posting a 3.80 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 107:33 K:BB across 22 starts (113.2 innings) with the PawSox. He also made four relief appearances for the big club, notching a 4.70 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 0:3 K:BB across 7.2 innings.

Red Sox's Justin Haley: Optioned to Pawtucket
Haley was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Haley has appeared in a total of four games for the Red Sox this year, including three in the past week after coming up from Pawtucket on Tuesday. Across 5.2 innings against the Yankees and Angels in recent days, he posted a 6.35 ERA and 1.76 WHIP. The reliever will continue to serve as depth at the minor-league level.

Haley made just one appearance during his 10-day stay with the Red Sox, tossing a pair of scoreless innings in a 5-1 win over the Orioles. Haley's rehab assignment must end by Tuesday at the latest, and given that there's no opening in the rotation at this time, the Twins appear to be content on leaving him in the bullpen for now. That said, given how much the Twins considered moving him into the rotation up to this point, he seems like a logical candidate for spot starts down the road in case another starter gets hurt.

Haley tossed five scoreless innings in his most recent rehab outing with Triple-A Rochester, adding credence to the notion that the Twins want the rookie to build up his arm for a potential starting role in the second half. Since the Twins are still vying for a playoff spot and Haley, a Rule 5 pick, lacks prior starting experience in the big leagues, it seems more likely the organization will try its luck with more battled-tested veterans like Bartolo Colon or Dillon Gee before giving the 26-year-old a trial in the rotation. Haley could still offer value to the Twins as a long man out of the bullpen.

Haley continues to work his way back from right shoulder soreness, and will head to the mound for his third rehab outing during Friday's game.
